The Bret Harte Bullfrogs golf team pulled off a stunning one-shot road win over defending-Valley Foothills League champion Escalon on Tuesday.
“I think Escalon’s girls were a little in shock that we beat them,” said Bret Harte head coach Rich Cathcart. “To say the least, our girls were very excited.”
Escalon (5-1) had previously been undefeated in league play and had won the VFL tournament on Monday in Lodi. Bret Harte had finished second, by six strokes, in Lodi.
On Tuesday, Bret Harte (3-3) put up a score of 157 on the par-32, while Escalon shot 158 on its home course.
Emaline Ellsworth paced Bret Harte on Tuesday with a 30. Teammates Melissa Spence shot a 40, Jaymie Heryford 43 and Morgan Taylor 44.
“Emaline was outstanding,” said Cathcart. “She had an eagle on the fourth hole — a par-4, 195-yarder. She knocked it on the green and one-putted.”
After Ellsworth entered the clubhouse, there was some tense moments for the Bullfrogs.
“Well, we were waiting for the final group to come in,” said Cathcart, “and it’s Emaline who keeps the score-tally for us and I asked her, ‘What score do we need?’ And she said, ‘44.’
“So when Morgan finished and told us about her 44, we told her ‘That’s what we needed,’ and Morgan said, ‘Alright!’ She was all excited and so were the rest of us. All of our kids did a great job and we’re thrilled for this win.”
At the seven-team VFL meet, Ellsworth shot an 85 to finish runner-up overall. Spence shot a 109, Taylor 110, and Rilee Hillman 122.
The top three VFL teams will make the playoffs and, says Cathcart, “We’re pretty confident that we can go to the postseason. Right now, we’re in second place, our girls are having fun and have great attitudes.”
