Calaveras Redskins grappler Justin Brown earned a medal placing seventh at the CIF State Wrestling Championships in Bakersfield last weekend.
Brown, one of the top-ranked wrestlers in California at 160 pounds, won his first two matches at Rabobank Arena before suffering a loss to Lemoore’s Isaiah Martinez, the eventual champion.
Wrestlers finishing in the top eight of their weight class earned a medal and the distinction of All-American.
Brown finished third at the Masters Individual Wrestling Championships in Stockton the weekend before to qualify for the State Meet.
Also qualifying for the State Meet for the Redskins was Noah Shelgren, who suffered a loss in his first match to Mat Boesen, of West Torrance, who finished third in the 220-pound division.
Shelgren later won two matches. The first was a 5-0 decision against Joshua Barretto and the second he won by fall at 4:48 against Sutter’s Trevor Holt. He was later defeated by the eventual seventh-place finisher Cortes Morales, of Clovis West.
Bret Harte’s Giovanni Murillo, Justin Barnes and Luke Brewer also qualified for the State Meet after all finished in sixth-place in their respective weight divisions at the Masters tournament.
Brewer just missed the medal podium going 4-2 in the 195-pound weight division while Murillo (138) and Barnes (152) each suffered losses in their two matches.
