Bret Harte girls put away Hughson

Bret Harte High School took control with a 13-0 run spanning the late first and early second quarters, and cruised to a 52-30 victory over Hughson last night in the first round of the Sac-Joaquin Section Division IV girls' basketball playoffs at the Bret Harte gym.

The fourth-seeded Bullfrogs (19-10) trailed 9-8 after a bit of a slow start, but took the lead for good on a 3-pointer by sophomore guard Kathleen Avrit with 1:10 left in the first quarter, and quickly built their lead to 21-9 as Emily Self scored off a pass from Alyssa Cheney, Megan Shires hit one of three free throws after being fouled on a 3-point attempt, Cheney scored inside, Self knocked down a trey, and Cheney scored again off an inside feed from fellow post player Amber Slankard.

The issue was pretty much settled at that point, as Bret Harte held a 29-16 halftime advantage and never led by fewer than 13 points in the second half.

Next up for the Mother Lode League-champion Bullfrogs is a second-round home game tomorrow night at 7 against No. 5 Orestimba of Newman (19-7), the Southern League runner-up which scored the last eight points to pull out a 66-60 first-round victory over No. 12 Summerville.

"We'll need our ‘A' game next time," Bret Harte coach Mike Lewis said.

The Bullfrogs will, indeed, have to be ready for Orestimba center Kelli Pon, who burned Summerville for 30 points.

Senior forward Tawnie Lee led Bret Harte against Hughson with 13 points, nine rebounds, and three assists. Avrit and Cheney each added eight points, five rebounds, and two assists; Shires finished with eight points; and forward Tianna Johnson had six points, four rebounds and three assists; and Self had five points and two assists.
