Summerville’s Andrew Brennan and Zach Marquez and Bret Harte’s Justin Barnes won individual championships.
Barnes, one of best in the Sac-Joaquin Section at 160 pounds, plans to wrestle in Bakersfield in March.
“He wants to place at State,” said Bullfrog head coach Alonzo Nalls. “He’s put in a lot of work the last two years. He’s wrestled well throughout the season, but he hasn’t really been pushed.”
Brennan (126) would like to make a return trip to Rabobank Arena. He pinned Daniel Schmitz, of Amador, in 34 seconds and won in the finals by technical fall, 20-3.
“Andrew really dominated his opponents from the get-go, which is what we expected,” Depaoli said. “We’re hoping this starts a run to a State berth. That’s his goal. He just needs to stay focused and healthy.”
Marquez, a 138-pound freshman, pinned both his opponents, including tyler Kuhn, of Linden, at 2:54 in the second round.
“For a freshman in his first year to win the MLL tourney is a real accomplishment,” DePaoli said. “He’s really stepped up this last month. To win both matches by pin shows his hard work is paying off.”
Finishing second for the Bears were Devin Conklin (113), Colby Dibble (106), Jed Glazier (145), Humphrey Quirie (152) and Elisha Flores (195). Tyler Stoy (170) and JT McCready (132) finished third.
Conklin gave his opponent a tough match in the final, losing 13-9.
“Devin lost in the final, but his match could have gone either way,” DePaoli said. “That’s good that he knows he can compete with top wrestlers in his weight class.”
Bret Harte 132-pounder Lyford Morris finished in seconds, falling in the final to Caleb Patrick, of Argonaut.
Bullfrog heavyweight Logan Turner finished in second, Alonzo Nalls Jr. (120) was third and Cody Kubiak (126), Christian Nelson (138) and Alex Aguilar (182) all finished fourth and advanced to Divisionals on Friday and Saturday at Delhi High School.
JV—Summerville Bears Tony Kellogg (152, second) and Micenely Woods (145, fourth) both placed.
