Bowling scene: Marking a three-year anniversary with some high and low scores

By RUTH ABREO

This column marks the beginning of my third year writing about our local bowling scene.
There have been some mistakes, but many people have said how much they have enjoy reading the column. To those that have said as much, I thank you and hope that this column continues to provide entertainment and information.

For this report, while the overall scores appear to be on the low side, there were some who bowled well.   Among the higher scores was Nanette Warzee (High Rollers) who had both the high game and series for the women with a 228/573.
For the men, it was Steve Montrose and Kevin Flanagan (both of Umchu Full House) with a 280 and 717, respectively.
Montrose’s 280 started with a strike, spare and strikes from there on and was 88 pins over average.
There was one other 700 – that was by Warren Walker (Umchu Full House) with a 701 and one near miss by Bob Thomas (Young at Heart) with a 699.
Among the superior accomplishments is Laura Persson (Senior Merrymakers) who bowled her first 500 series since losing her leg two years ago. She’s also anxious to bowl a 200 game.
Kenny Phillips and his sister Natalie, both bowled memorable games.  Kenny bowled 53 pins over his average with a 165 while younger sister Natalie bowled her highest game ever – a 151.
Also noted is Abigail Persson who bowled 51 pins over average with a 136.
Other notable scores include: Monday Nevada – Robert Porovich 258/696; High Rollers – Warren Walker 259, Richard Dost 655, Bob Peters 256/651; Young at Heart – John Rago 257, Dave Rossi 255; Jokers Wild – Steve Feola 253/668, Mary Feola 559, Derek Gregory 681 and Roger Brown 669; Early Birds – Marilyn Day 554; Umchu Full House – Jeremy Curry 279/686, Kevin Flanagan 267; and Mixed Angels – Jeff Hurley 259. On some of the leagues there have been a number of 200 games bowled by both the men and women, however, they do not meet the criteria for this column.
In the “I can’t  believe that I beat myself” category this week, we have: Monday Nevada – Jeff Larson 84 pins over with a 277 and Les Olson 72 pins over with a 266; High Rollers – Matt Smith 91 over with a 229; Morning Rollers – George Johnson 79 over with 227; Jokers Wild – Marty Pierce 78 over with a 279.
Black Oak’s monthly Senior No-Tap results for the men are: Joe Rodriguez 863, Mike Silva 830, Bill Hall 818 and for the women, Marlene Katsufrakis 847, Ruth Benson 843 and Debbie Silva 800.
From all reports, it appears that the two fundraising tournaments (Bowl for Local Veterans and the youth) were well attended. No other information has been made available.
For those interested in the PBA televised events, the majority of the tournaments will be held in Las Vegas, starting on Dec. 4 at 10 a.m. on ESPN and will continue through Apr. 15.  The times will vary throughout the season.
Trivia Answer: In Reno in both 2013 and 2014. (Source:  USBC)
