Bowling: Winter League sign-ups are under way

By RUTH ABREO
For The Union Democrat

Bowler’s Trivia Question: What is the most number of consecutive split conversions in one game by an individual? Answer at end of article.

This week we start with a correction: Last week’s Senior No-Tap results should have read Jim Shoemaker, rather than Jim Sehr.
Sign-ups are still being taken for the upcoming Winter leagues and additional information about the individual leagues can be obtained from Black Oak Lanes at 928-9419.

The leagues include: The youth league on Sundays; Family Affair (6:30 p.m.), also on Sunday; Monday includes SIRS (10 a.m. and must be a member of SIRS to bowl) and Monday Nevada (6:30 p.m.); Tuesday has High Rollers (6:30 p.m.) while Wednesday has Morning Rollers (10 a.m.), Young at Heart (1:30 p.m.) and Jokers Wild (6:30 p.m.); Thursday has Early Birds (10 a.m.), Senior Merrymakers (1:30 p.m.), Mixed Angels and Umchu Full House (both at 6:30 p.m.) while Friday has Gambler’s Getaway (6:30 p.m.).
Monday Nevada and Gamblers Getaway currently remain the only 5-person team leagues. All of the others are 4-person teams.
All but one of the high scores were bowled in Jokers Wild with Robert Porovich having the highest series with a 711 and Holly Matranga with a 237/617. Felix Espino (Young at Heart) had the highest game with a 268 which was 96 pins over average — he also bowled 141 pins over with 657 series.
Other notable scores are very slim with Jim Simmons, of Young at Heart, with 662 and John Miller and Warren Walker, of Jokers Wild, with 677 and 667 respectively.
Next week’s report is expected to include some league winners.
Trivia Answer: Nine by David Williams of Charleston, SC in November 1964. (Source: USBC Unofficial records).
