Bears welcome Ripon gridders

The Summerville High School football team will get a look in the mirror when it hosts the Ripon Indians on Friday night at 7:30 at Thorsted Field in Tuolumne.

The Indians, who finished 1-9 last season (including a 26-23 loss at Summerville in Week 2), are coming off a strong opening week under first-year head coach P.J. Theriault.

Using an offense suspiciously similar to that employed by Summerville upon head coach Dave Woods' arrival in 1990, Ripon ripped Linden 27-0 at home in its opener.

"Ripon runs our old offense of double tight ends, double wingbacks and toe-to-toe (line) splits," Woods said. "It's a tough offense to defend if you don't read your keys."

Also like Summerville, the Indians have only a handful of starters back from 2001 and a roster that is smaller in numbers than usual.

But unlike the Bears, who went 7-4-1 en route to a berth in the Sac-Joaquin Section Division IV championship game, the Indians don't seem to miss last year's group, which finished last in the Trans-Valley League with an 0-7 mark.

The rushing attack of Ryan Machado (14 carries, 102 yards) and Scott Bunnell (10 carries, 102 yards) combined with the passing attack of quarterback Mike Harkov (seven completions in 12 attempts for 119 yards, two touchdowns, zero interceptions) and tight end Mike Donahue (two touchdown receptions) carried the Indians to a surprisingly easy win over a supposedly improved Linden team.
