Bears roundup: Bears softball rally falls short in 7th

The Summerville Bears softball team made a late rally in the bottom of the seventh inning, but came up short, losing 8-7 to Golden Valley in a non-league game on Friday in Tuolumne.

With two outs and runners on first and second, Summerville slugger Sydney Owens hit a line drive to right center, but Golden Valley came up with the big play.

“The centerfielder made a great catch to end the game,” said Bears head coach Ben  Watson. “Otherwise, it was a tie or maybe the game-winning hit. The girl made a great catch.”

Golden Valley raced to a 6-1 lead after the top of the fourth, but Summerville mounted a comeback.

The Bears scored three runs in the bottom of the fourth and went into the fifth down 6-4.

Golden Valley added two more runs and then Summerville found its stride, scoring three combined runs in fifth and seventh, respectively.

“We left runners in scoring position in several innings,” Watson said. “We were right there. Had an opportunity to win late. I was proud of the girls for coming back in the seventh.”

Summerville outhit Golden Valley 12 to eight, but committed five errors.

“We’re hitting the ball well, but we just have to play better defense and keep people off base,” Watson said. “We have to shore up our defense and we can’t give away any free bases. That’s kind of our issue. We’re having a little too many errors and we’re walking people.”

Eight different players recorded a hit for Summerville. Shelby Conklin led the team at the plate, going 3 for 4 and both Lydia and Liz Vass were 2 of 4.

Summerville (2-6) plays its final non-league game of the year against Big Valley Christian on Tuesday at 4 p.m. in Modesto. In their first matchup earlier this month, the Bears knocked off Big Valley Christian 7-3 at home.

“We’re swinging the bat, but our defense and control problems right now are hurting us,” Watson said. “I like where we’re at. We have one more game to go before league, and ideally, we will be ready to go.”

Bears baseball falls to Central Catholic

Summerville senior Brendan Brick went 2 for 3 at the plate and drove in a run on a double, but the Bears baseball team fell 5-2 to Central Catholic in a non-league gameon Friday in Modesto.

Central Catholic built a two-run lead in the third inning, but Summerville tied it up in bottom of the fourth.

“I thought we did pretty good,” said Summerville head coach Larry Gold. “A lot of improvement. I was pleased about that. The defense, they had the five errors, but there were times where our defense looked good as well. They turned in a couple of doublesplays. I was really pleased.”

Central Catholic broke the tie in the top of the sixth and sealed its win by scoring two more runs in the seventh.

Johnathan Olsen batted 1 for 2 with a walk and a run for Summerville. Bryce Farrell singled and scored a run.

Farrell started on the mound and retired two batters. The right-hander gave up just two hits and two unearned runs in four innings of service.

The Bears (1-5) host Ripon today for a makeup game at 3:30 p.m. in Tuolumne.

Bear golfers shoot season low in win

Summerville golfer Jordan Fish shot a team-best 42 and the Bears defeated Mother Lode League foe Amador 253-279 on Thursday at Castle Oaks in Ione.

Max Wulf carded a 49 and Josh Freedman added a 51. Garrett Bell fielded a 55 and Brandon Reel finished with a 56.

“It was our lowest round of the year, so I was pleased with that,” said Summerville head coach Dan Atkins. “Jordan has continued to play consistently solid golf, and Josh Freedman closed out the round strong with five pars in a row.”

Up next for Summerville (2-2 MLL) is an away match at Linden on Tuesday at 3 p.m.
