Bears rip Lions, remain perfect in MLL

The Summerville Bears used a fast start on Friday, outscoring Linden 22-3 in the first quarter, en route to a 71-42 hoops destruction in front of a fired up crowd for winter homecoming in Tuolumne.

“I know that we’ve been winning some games, but we haven’t been playing great ball and the kids came out a little more focused and sharper on offense Friday,” said Summerville head coach Ben Watson.

The Lions would be outscored by the Bears in every quarter except for the fourth, but that hardly made a difference as Summerville entered that final period with a healthy 32-point advantage.

“I thought it was a really good team effort in terms of executing our offense,” said Watson. “I thought everybody shared the ball really well and everybody got involved early and that’s the way we want to be. We want everybody to score so the defense can’t just focus on one guy.”

Summerville’s Logen Foster had a game-high 18 points while Joey Brocchini added 12, Jesse Roberson 10 and Rosendo Amaya-Wood nine. Roberson also led the Bears in rebounding with eight.

Roberson said Linden came out trying to shoot 3-pointers early but the shots weren’t falling which helped lead to the Lions’ big 19-point deficit at the end of the first quarter.

He also said the energetic atmosphere played a role in the Bears’ early surge.

“We were finally back at home after some tough away games and it was our winter homecoming night so that kind of got us going,” said Roberson.

Roberson noted several players who came off the bench in Friday’s game and helped power the big win.

“I thought Jeff Grabow did a really good job for us,” Roberson said. “He was really aggressive, played with a lot of energy and did some really good things for our team.”

Roberson added, “It was nice to win, especially in front of all the fans. And hopefully, that will bring them back for future games, including this upcoming one against Amador.”

The No. 1 Bears (17-3, 9-0 Mother Lode League) are undefeated in league play entering Tuesday’s contest against the No. 3 Buffaloes (13-8, 5-4 MLL).

Last time the teams met in Sutter Creek on Jan. 15, Amador had the lead entering the fourth quarter but Summerville pulled out a tight 50-48 win.

“With a couple minutes to go, we were able to pull one out and were pretty fortunate to escape with the victory,” said Watson. “So,  hopefully, the kids remember that and try to step it up on Tuesday. If we play up to our potential then I think we’ll be fine.”

Tip-off for Tuesday’s battle in Tuolumne is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. It kicks off a three-game week for the Bears that sees them also travel to Angels Camp to play Bret Harte on Thursday and then host Argonaut on Friday.
