Bears just miss big upset of Calaveras, 2-0

SAN ANDREAS The Summerville High School Bears and Calaveras Redskins slipped, slid and stumbled on a rain-soaked field Friday night. When the splashing stopped, unbeaten Calaveras had escaped with a victory by the unlikely score of 2-0.

Summerville is now 2-6 overall and 2-2 in Mother Lode League play

while the Redskins are 8-0 and 4-0.

The only score came with 11:12 left in the first quarter, when Matt Zahniser sacked Bears quarterback Mike Gisi in the endzone.

The Bears won the toss and elected to receive. On the kickoff, Summerville return man Kevin Vankirk tried to catch the ball instead of letting it go out of bounds and getting the ball at the 35-yard line. He stepped out of bounds at the Bears five and after two running plays by Brian Brannon for two yards, Gisi dropped back to pass and was sacked by Zahniser.

Little did anyone know those would be the only points of the game. And little did anyone suspect it would take another big play by Zahniser near the end of the game to keep Summerville from pulling a huge upset.

After the Bears took over at its their 49 with 5:53 remaining in the game, coach Dave Woods decided it was time for a trick play and called for a halfback option pass. Neckel took the handoff, ran right and passed to Daters for a gain of 22 yards.

The Bears quickly moved the ball down to the five behind the tough running of DeVilla. DeVilla then carried the ball the next three plays taking it down to the one.

On fourth and goal, Woods sent in Neckel to attempt a 18-yard field goal with 2:50 left in the game. The attempt was blocked by Zahniser, and the Redskins took over at the 25. They were able to run out the clock.
