Bears beat Skins in soccer |
The Summerville Bears soccer team continued to play top-flight soccer on Tuesday and kept a firm grip on second place in the Mother Lode League with a 2-1 road win over Calaveras. “This was our game to win,” said Bears head coach Dave Reel. With a laugh, he added, “I just wish we could have won it all a tad sooner.” The Bears out-shot Calaveras by a whopping 18-2 margin yet trailed 1-0 with 10 minutes left in the contest. Then Summerville’s Gabe Zubek made a long throw-in which forward Brandon Reel chested, then drilled 17-yards into the net. “That was a big moment for our team,” said Coach Reel. “And it was also, hopefully, a big moment for Brandon. Brandon has had shots barely miss by just about every way you can imagine — off the post, balls ricocheted here and there, goalies barely getting a finger on a ball. This was his first goal in league play and now we’re hoping for plenty more.” One thing Brandon Reel has been delivering all season is high-quality assists and Tuesday night was no different. The ultra-talented Reel delivered a perfect cross to Herculano Oliveria who booted home a 20-yard blast with 1:30 left in the game. The Bears are now 5-2-1 while Calaveras fell to 3-5. “If we can stay healthy and play like we did tonight,” said Coach Reel, “we’ll be fine. If we keep dominating in the shots-on-goal statistic like we did tonight, I’ll be pleased. Tonight’s win should be a big confidence builder for our team.” |
