Bears, Cats fall in baseball tourneys

RIPON — The Summerville High School baseball team was sailing along with a 3-0 lead against Turlock Christian in the opening round of the Modesto Christian Tournament at Ripon High yesterday when the Bears suddenly hit a rocky fourth inning.

Turlock pushed across all nine of its runs in the top of the fourth and then withstood a late Summerville rally to hand the Bears (0-1-1) a 9-8 defeat.

Summerville starting pitcher Bubba Fristad, who struck out six of the 10 batters he faced in his first three innings of work, unraveled in the fourth when the Eagles tagged him for seven earned runs on five hits in just one-third of an inning.

"Bubba became one-dimensional," Summerville coach Donnie Wright said. "When he had all of his pitches working, he was fine. But, he lost location of his change-up and started throwing fastballs down the middle to the meat of their order."

Travis Ford, who relieved Fristad in the fourth, picked up the tough-luck loss despite striking out five in 1.2 innings by yielding the Eagles' last run.

Sonora baseball

Lincoln of Stockton swung some big bats in handing Sonora an 11-1 loss in the first round of the Turlock Tournament.

The Trojans smacked 13 hits and ended the game in five innings on the 10-run-lead rule, snapping the Wildcats' three-game winning streak in the process. Chris Errecart did the most damage, going 3-for-3 with a double and a home run. Kevin Dalonzo added two doubles on a 3-for-4 day.

"Their top four hitters pretty much killed us," Sonora coach Mike Silva.

Sonora (3-3) forged a brief 1-1 tie in the top of the second inning on a single by Mike Taylor and a triple by Tommy Grove. But the Wildcats fell behind 5-1 in the bottom of the inning and managed only two other hits, singles by Colby Jamar and Travis Hendrix.
