The Summerville Bears junior varsity boys’ basketball team claimed second place at the Hilmar Tournament on Dec. 19-21.
Summerville opened tournament play with a 49-39 win over Los Banos.
Cameron Saunders led the Bears in scoring with 16 points and Sam Burns chipped in 12.
Summerville out rebounded Los Banos 48 to 21 with Jacob Branscum-Higuera pulling down a team-high 11 to go with his eight points. Saunders and Cole Brewster each grabbed six rebounds.
In overtime, Summerville pulled away from Mariposa, winning 54-44.
Mariposa owned the lead from the outset with a 16-10 and a 25-15 advantage after the first and second quarters.
But the Bears came roaring back and sliced the lead to just two points entering the fourth period.
In the final eight minutes, Summerville knotted up the score at 42 to force extra time.
The Bears outscored Mariposa 12 to 2 in overtime to earn a 10-point victory.
Against Hilmar, Summerville struggled shooting the ball consistently and fell 59-36.
“The Bears started slowly and never got on track,” said Bears JV head coach Mike McLaurin. “For the first time this season, no player scored in double figures.”
Summerville was barely outrebounded 26-24.
Saunders led the Bears again with eight points and eight rebounds. He was selected to the All-Tournament Team for his strong play.
The JV Bears open Mother Lode League play against Argonaut on Jan. 3 in Jackson.
