Baseball Frogs gain first-place tie

JACKSON — The last four games have been all or nothing for the Bret Harte High School baseball team. Yesterday, the Bullfrogs had it all in a 14-2 victory over Argonaut that moved them into a first-place tie with Linden in the Mother Lode League.

Bret Harte (10-6, 5-2 MLL) pounded 14 hits and got a three-hit, nine-strikeout pitching performance from junior right-hander Anthony Bennett in the makeup of an April 4 rainout.

The Bullfrogs have won three of their last four, the three victories by a combined score of 39-6 wrapped around a mysterious 12-1 loss to Calaveras last Friday.

Sean Nelson led yesterday's glorified batting practice by going 4-for-4 with a double and a run batted in. Bennett helped himself by going 3-for-3 with a double and two RBIs, while Levi Emerson went 2-for-3 with a double and four RBIs. Also doubling were Judd Bales, who knocked in two runs, Ken Baptista and Sean Coggins.

"We hit the ball pretty hard," Bret Harte coach Heath Lane said.

Bret Harte scored three runs in every inning except the third, when it scored two, and ended the game in five innings on the 10-run-lead rule.

On the mound, Bennett gave up no earned runs while improving his record to 5-1. He has a Dennis Eckersley-like ratio of 50 strikeouts to three walks in 45 innings.

"Anthony just has been incredible," Lane said. "He gets ahead of everybody, and he has more velocity than he's ever had so he can throw the ball past some people."

Josh Roberts tripled and Kelly Morgan doubled for Argonaut (10-5, 4-3), which scored twice in the first but was blanked by Bennett thereafter.

The Bullfrogs and Mustangs meet again today at 4 p.m. at the Bret Harte diamond in a regularly scheduled game.
