Baseball Cats drop 15-14 slugfest

MODESTO — Its scoring drought ended in a big way, but the Sonora High School baseball team's losing streak continued as the Wildcats gave up three runs in the bottom of the seventh inning and lost 15-14 to Downey in a non-league game Saturday.

The Wildcats (5-10) had been shut out in their previous three games and by the third inning of Saturday's game hadn't scored a run in 19 innings. They put that streak to rest with three runs in the top of the third, then proceeded to go crazy and score 11 times in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings to take a 14-12 lead.

Travis Hendrix hit a grand slam in the fifth and Travis Flosi smacked a two-run double in the sixth to put Sonora ahead.

All told, the Wildcats rapped 17 hits and scored as many runs against the stunned Knights as they had in the previous eight games combined.

Casey Ramback went 4-for-4, Mike Taylor 3-for-5 with two doubles (the same as Flosi), Josh Townsend 3-for-3 and Justin Hart 2-for-2.

Why all the sudden production?

"I guess because it was a non-league, our guys didn't feel any pressure and just went out and had fun with it," Sonora coach Mike Silva said.

However, Sonora's sixth straight loss couldn't be avoided as Downey scored its seventh-inning runs without getting a hit. Three Knights walked, two were hit by pitches and the last reached on an error.

Downey totaled barely half the hits — nine — that Sonora did, but worked three Sonora pitchers for 16 walks. Of the batters who walked, nine scored.

Eric Garrison went 2-for-2, Bryant Kendall 2-for-3 with a double, and Armando Canez 2-for-4 for Downey.

Sonora returns to Valley Oak League play Wednesday against Buhach Colony of Atwater, with the first pitch scheduled for 4 p.m. at Bev Barron Field.
