SAN ANDREAS — Two streaks ended for the Bret Harte High School boys' basketball team last night, the most important being the Bullfrogs' three-game losing streak as they posted a 65-55 victory over archrival Calaveras.

The other streak that ended was senior guard Aaron Elevi's school-record string of 29 straight free throws. He missed his first attempt, but made three later on and finished with 13 points, including a half-court shot at the end of the opening period.

"We'll take the win anytime," Bret Harte coach Jerry Rucker said, sorry to see Elevi's streak end but more than happy to take the first round of the all-Calaveras County series.

Bret Harte (10-12, 2-3 Mother Lode League) jumped all over the Redskins (13-7, 2-3) and led 16-4 at the quarter break. Calaveras bounced back and whittled Bret Harte's lead to 27-21 at halftime. Twice, the Redskins drew to within one point in the third quarter — 38-37 and 44-43.

Bret Harte responded each time, the second with a big 3-pointer by Guy Castle just before quarter's end. His shot started a 9-0 run that put the Bullfrogs back in control, and they ultimately built their lead to 65-50.

Castle led Bret Harte with 15 points, while Travis Emerson scored 14.

Calaveras got 19, including five 3-pointers in the second half, from David Coggin, and 17 from Geoff Dixon. However, the Redskins got only two points from one of their stars, Brandon Rogers, and didn't even have the services of another, Greg McInturf. The latter couldn't play because he was ejected during last Friday's 69-60 victory over Argonaut.

Bret Harte was down a player, too, as center Jeremiah Johnston was held out for being late.

None of that was about to dampen Rucker's postgame mood.

"It was a good win for us," he said. "Our kids played with more of a sense of desperation than their kids. Calaveras looked a little flat, and our kids wanted it it a little more."

Round 2 of the rivalry is Feb. 21 in the regular-season finale in Angels Camp. Bret Harte's next game is Friday on the road against Linden at 7:45 p.m.
