Darcy Wingo's second go-around as the Summerville High School varsity football coach officially got under way yesterday when the Bears opened preseason practice following the first day of school.

"It went pretty well," said Wingo, who counted 32 players (including 20 juniors) at yesterday's practice on Thorsted Field.

"That's about what I thought we'd get," he said. "Most have worked pretty good throughout the summer, and I think most will stick around."

For the first three days of practice, the Bears will concentrate on conditioning — running the bleachers, one-mile runs around the track, sprints and weight training — as well as learning the offense under new coordinator Ben Watson.

"The only equipment we're working with is footballs and helmets," Wingo said. "So, we're finding our specialty people and running a little offense with the skill kids. Linemen can only do so much without pads."

After the Bears begin practicing in full pads on Thursday, defense will get its share of attention.

"We'll ease into it a bit, but we've got to identify the defensive personalities as soon as possible," Wingo said.

Summerville has nearly three weeks of practice before it will take part in a four-team scrimmage with Sonora, Riverbank and Argonaut at Sonora High School on Sept. 5.

The Bears open the regular season on Sept. 12 at home against Escalon.
