The 2003 Summerville High School football team has a new coach, but will face the same schedule as last season's team.
Much like 2002, the Bears and new head coach Darcy Wingo will see Escalon, Ripon, Gustine, Hilmar and Livingston in the season's first five weeks, but with the home sites of the games reversed.
Last year, while playing three of its five non-league games on the road, Summerville went 1-4 against those same teams and was outscored by a combined margin of 173-53. The Bears only non-league victory was a 32-28 win over Livingston in the preseason finale.
This season, Summerville will open at Thorsted Field in Tuolumne against defending Sac-Joaquin Section Division IV champion and perennial Trans-Valley League powerhouse Escalon on Sept. 12.
Summerville will then visit Ripon of the TVL in Week 2 before returning to Tuolumne for consecutive games against Sac-Joaquin Section Division V runner-up Gustine of the Southern League and Hilmar of the TVL. The Bears conclude their preseason on Oct. 10 at Livingston of the TVL.
Summerville will begin its Mother Lode League season in Week 6 on Oct. 17 at home against defending league champion and Division IV runner-up Calaveras.
Summerville will then find itself on the road for three straight weeks during the meat of its conference schedule at Amador in Sutter Creek, at Bret Harte in Angels Camp and at Argonaut in Jackson before returning home to host Linden in the season finale on Nov. 14.
Summerville also finished 1-4 in conference play last season with its only victory being a 27-7 decision over Bret Harte at home in Week 7.
