The Summerville High School baseball team took out two weeks' worth of frustration on the Riverbank Bruins yesterday at the Summerville diamond in Tuolumne.

The Bears (2-7-1) broke a six-game losing streak and snapped a 17-inning scoreless streak as they blasted the Bruins 9-3 to wrap up their cross-over series with the Trans-Valley League.

"That was the pivotal game I've been looking forward to," Summerville coach Donnie Wright said. "I felt we needed this game to be the one where we'd come together and turn the corner."

Led by Travis Ford, the Bears turned the corner in just about every conceivable fashion. Ford picked up the win with a complete-game performance from the mound, while at the plate, his three-run home run in the sixth inning sparked a six-run outburst.

The Bears backed up Ford's effort by committing just one error and rapping out a season-high 14 hits.

"I think this could be the one we use to turn things around and attack Bret Harte and Amador next week," Wright said.

After falling behind 1-0 in the top of the first inning, the Bears responded immediately by putting up a three-spot in the bottom half of the frame.

After Wyatt Ray and Quint Gerber opened the inning with a double and a bunt single, respectively, the Bears pulled off a double steal, scoring Ray and sending Gerber to second.

Cody Munsel followed with a single, putting runners on the corners. Adam Artzer then scored Gerber with a deep sacrifice fly to the center field fence, putting the Bears ahead 2-1.

After Munsel advanced to third on a wild pitch, Bubba Fristad drove home the third run of the inning with a single.

Staked to a 3-1 lead, Ford helped himself out in the bottom of the sixth. After Ray and Gerber led off the inning with singles, Ford hit a home run over the 323-foot sign in left field, upping Summerville's lead to 6-1.

Summerville continued the attack as Munsel singled and scored on Fristad's third base hit of the game. Ryan Drewery then capped the outburst with a long, two-run home run over the fence in left-center field.
