Calaveras County General Plan’s Housing Element

To the Editor:
On reading the general plan housing element adopted by the Calaveras Board of Supervisors on June 10, 2010, I discovered that the document was 10 years out of date when it was adopted because it was based on 2000 census data. Is the updated general plan going to be worth the enormous cost in tax dollars and lost property rights? Will any entrepreneur ever again try to open a new business in this county? Did I miss the update? Is this planning fantasy anything more than continued expansion of government into private lives and businesses?
Every home in the USA where I have lived was mostly the result of an individual family’s effort to satisfy its housing needs and desires, and a builder’s efforts to make a living by meeting that demand. Is that not a win-win arrangement? What kind of central planning can top that? I certainly do not want to live in a government-planned project. I have seen those and they are ugly.
Let’s try for a better planning policy that guarantees a family’s right to choose where and how it lives within its financial means.

Kristin Olsen – thank you

To the Editor:
Thank you Assemblywoman Kristin Olsen for co-hosting the Natural Resource Summit with TuCARE on Sept. 29th and 30th. Your involvement in this county is commendable. Thank you for taking the time to educate the community about water issues facing this area. The foothills will miss you after next year’s elections.

Reagan, Kennedy Cold War

To the Editor:
Domenic Torchia’s recent letter exposing the Reagan myth is an eye opener for some.
My complaint has always been the phony claims that he ended the Cold War. John F. Kennedy ended the Cold War by exposing the Soviet’s weaknesses. Many countries around the world were concerned about ending up on the winning team and cozied up to both Russia and the U.S. at the time. After the Cuban Missile Crisis it was obvious who would end up a winner. The only thing that kept the “Cold War” going as a threat was the defense industry of which Reagan was an easy to manipulate tool.
In the end, Reagan was responsible for degrading California’s education system and helping to destroy the middle class’ economic welfare in America. Not anything to be proud of. Nice fellow though.
