Letters to the editor for Sept. 29, 2011

China’s Economy

To the Editor:
    Why is China winning?
Answer: 1. Giant corporations do not dictate policy; 2. Nationalized banks restrict private greed; 3. China does not spend billions to elect marginal leaders; 4. China has a goal of building a bigger middle class; 5. China wants to be number one in everything; 6. The three so-called great religions are marginalized; 7. Confucianism is in their DNA.

Climate Change

To the Editor:
I read with continuing amusement about those who deny man-made influences on climate change. In a letter to the editor, Sept. 21, writer Higgins names scientists and then incorrectly attributes the Heidelberg Appeal as supporting her view.
Here is what one of her named scientists, Dr. Thomas Karl, is  actually quoted as stating: “The state of the science continues to indicate that modern climate changes is affected by human influences, primarily human induced changes in atmospheric composition.”
Another, Dr. Tom Wigley is quoted: “The human induced changes that are expected over the next 100 years are much, much greater than any changes that societies experienced in the past.”
The writer refers to Dr. Fred Singer; questionably, a reliable unbiased man of learning who has been a paid consultant for Arco, ExxonMobil, Shell, etc.
NASA scientist Roy W. Spencer promotes his postulate that increasing cloud cover over the planet is largely responsible for global warming. Mr. Spencer is also out of the scientific mainstream with his belief in Intelligent Design.
Then the writer throws in the Heidelberg Appeal statement “meaning," as scientists supporting no mandatory greenhouse gas cuts, something completely foreign to the actual text and something that supposedly was interpreted to further their agenda, that being the National Center for Public Policy (a Conservative think tank). Read it yourself and you will see.
If the Titanic’s crew were in denial, so too are the passengers aboard who don’t have all the facts and science, yet willingly have boarded thinking that a little knowledge is better than none. Trust in the preponderance of scientific facts before sailing on the White Star Line.
