Labor Day fundraiser
To the Editor:
Recently I attended a fundraiser on Labor Day weekend for the historical society in Groveland. Shockingly, several residents attending the event brought their own beverages although clearly marked signs prohibited such insensitive behavior. This event took many hours of volunteer work, was well organized with something for everybody for no charge. More than $1,000 was paid for an awesome band. Free children's activities included a petting zoo, horse/wagon rides, and kids' games. Local artifacts and informational displays were available.
Why would somebody be so unsupportive of this organization and bring their own beverages to a fundraiser? The beverage prices and selection were reasonable. If one goes in a restaurant and doesn't like the selection offered, and brings their own beverage, they would expect to pay a corkage fee. If these people didn't like the drinks offered at this event, they could have, respectfully, offered a "corkage" fee or spent money otherwise by which to support this group's fundraising efforts, (which such action was not evident).
The historical society relies on fundraising to maintain the community's museum and to preserve and restore local historical assets, which serves to protect the attractiveness of the entire community. My heart goes out to the many volunteers who worked so hard on this event. To the chairperson and crews: bravo on an event where supporters could relax in a comfortable venue, listen to live music, and socialize. Thank you heartily to the world-renowned stunt pilots, for an excellent air show, giving freely of their own time and fuel, and who bought their beverages.
Columbia School Board’s Letter
To the Editor:
Read the letter to parents from the Columbia School District Board. Mr. Pendley has been surgically removed by the school board from all aspects of this tragic affair. That won't work. He is either involved because he is a parent of the convicted man or because he is being paid for being the head administrator of the school district. Since he is both, he has to stand up and be accountable.
