Sonora Farmers Market is a treasure

To the Editor:

For the last five months we have all been able to enjoy the downtown Sonora Farmers Market. Not only are we provided with quality, locally-grown agricultural products — fruits, vegetables, meat, honey, olive oil, flowers, plants and tasty food — it is a bustling square block of social interaction. People of all ages anticipate their Saturday morning ritual. The market is a timely reflection of the importance of agriculture in our rural county. Nearly a $30 million industry. I urge everyone to support this great event next year and I extend a huge thank you to the organizers and promoters of our Sonora Farmers Market. And, the new mural is worth the price of admission … free!

Obama hypocritical on nation’s debt

To the Editor:

Back in 2003, Senator Obama gave a speech to a group of union members. In that speech, he laid out a health care law.

He envisioned a plan that would one day be considered a single-payer plan. This would be completely run by the government. Obama reiterated that it might take up to a few years to reach full implementation, but eventually it would be nationwide.

This gives a person a complete view of Obama’s future intentions.

Back in 2006 Senator Obama lambasted President Bush for driving up such a huge deficit. At the time, the debt was $8 trillion. He went on to say how it would burden our children, and how it was unpatriotic to put our country close to insolvency. At the time the debt ratio was $35,000 per person.

Today thanks to Obama our debt stands at $17 trillion and a debt ratio of $54,000 per person. Ironically he never refers to this debt as a potential problem for our nation.

Back in 2006 and 2007 Senator Obama voted against raising the debt ceiling. He never stated that not raising the debt would lead to default and economic collapse.

Now that he is president, not allowing the debt ceiling to rise would be complete capitulation. He reiterates that we must raise the debt ceiling and that it will not increase our national debt. Then why do we need to raise it?

President Obama, welcome to the 21st century. We have the ability to both record audio and video tapes for future viewing and listening.

Finally, none of this material will ever be shown or heard on our national media. Unfortunately the media is in bed with our incompetent leader.

Segarini thanks Tuolumne County

To the Editor:

Because my departure from the Tuolumne County Chamber of Commerce was rather sudden, nothing to do with health, I didn’t get a chance to thank all of the business community and volunteers of the chamber that I have worked with over the past 17 years.

It has been my pleasure to have been involved with so many people that have worked and are continuing to work in behalf of our community. I have said it before and I will say it again, the generosity of the people and business entrepreneurs of this county is unmatched anywhere. Also a thank you to all the public elected officials I have had the pleasure to work with over the past couple of decades. I have a lot of respect for our elected officials who commit to this job and thank them for their dedication to our community.

Many businesses have faced unprecedented economic conditions over the past five years. Unfortunately, many have not been able to survive, yet there are others that continue and are succeeding. Believe me I know, as my son and I went into the very difficult restaurant business in 2008 and have been able to survive, thanks to the locals who have supported us during these difficult times. Make no mistake about it, regardless of what they say nationally, reality is that many are still struggling here in the county.

I want to thank all the folks who have wished me well on my departure from the chamber. I feel a part of my success as president and CEO was the fact in private life I had always been in business, from working in a family-owned grocery store chain, to working my own wholesale and retail businesses. This experience gave me the background that many of our politicians should be required to have, workplace reality.

Thanks again for a wonderful time representing the people and businesses of Tuolumne County. I will continue championing our free markets and support in any way I can to shopping locally.

George Segarini

Past president and CEO,

Tuolumne County Chamber of Commerce
