Republicans should start compromising
To the Editor:
Republican lunies just cost America over $25 billion...We should insist that these clowns to pay us back! Let’s start with revenue reform legislation to make sure billionaires and millionaires pay taxes at rates no lower than barbers and mechanics and that they pay taxes on all profits and capital gains at those same rates (or progressively higher…remember, billionaires create jobs when they have to choose between paying high taxes on windfalls or reinvesting in growing their businesses!).
Contrary to what we’re hearing from Fox News and sold-out Republican politicians, Obamacare will save taxpayers billions, cover millions of Americans and lower insurance rates by bringing more ratepayers into the pool. Republicans who start working with Democrats to compromise on legislation might have a future…the political terrorists and traitors of the Tea Party crowd however are headed for history’s trash bin.
Many people still self identify as Republican...they are not bad people, they just believe that government should be only as large as absolutely necessary. So do most of we Democrats and progressives! So elect people willing to have an intelligent debate about what’s necessary for government to do, make compromise the way the Founding Fathers and the Constitution intended and then generate revenue to cover the costs of the government we all compromised on.
What’s the point of the judicial system?
To the Editor:
Can anyone explain to me why we have a judicial system?
I read in Wednesday’s Union Democrat where the courts advised Gov. Brown that we need to release several thousand prisoners, I assume due to overcrowding. Instead of releasing new prisoners, why not release the ones that have been on death row for years and years? Since we can’t have the death penalty, release them into the areas of the judges that sentenced them and make sure they cannot leave that area and let the people there worry about them.
Or better still, don’t bother to take them to court at all, just slap them on the wrist and turn them loose. I am coming to the conclusion that the judicial system is nothing but a big joke, and a big expenditure to the state of California.
