Liberty and Democracy

To the Editor:
I would like to define these two words so people will understand, and not be fooled anymore by our government.
Liberty — The condition of those who are free and independent. The power to do what one pleases. Freedom from restraint, not confined. Having the right. Are we really free to do what we please as long as it’s within the law, and it’s not hurting anyone? Not anymore. Can you ride dirt bikes, go shooting, gold panning, etc. without people calling the authorities? No. Whatever happened to the song My Country Tis of Thee? We used to sing this in school. Not anymore. This just shows me we are losing our liberty.
Democracy — A government by the people (rule of the majority). Government in which the supreme power is vested in the people and exercised by them directly or indirectly through representation.
How many times have you heard either Democrats or Republicans promoting Democracy and not a Republic? If a Democracy is so great why is it not mentioned in our Constitution? I don’t know about you, but I don’t want a majority of people governing me. There is one GOP candidate who champions the Constitution. His name is Ron Paul. Every debate he talks about holding to constitutional principles, but he’s always ignored or laughed at by the other candidates. Are the constitutional principles really a laughing matter? Apparently it is to them because they want to promote Democracy.
Don’t be fooled by the media or the candidates anymore. Our constitution is slipping away. What’s next — a world government run by the United Nations? It’s your call, do what’s right. Vote for the one who upholds the constitution.

Global Warming evidence

To the Editor:
On Oct. 24 you published a letter from Jan Higgins, in which she argued that the recent Sept. 13, resignation of 82-year-old Ivar Giaever from the American Physical Society is evidence that global warming is an invention of environmental groups seeking money and power. It's true that Dr. Giaever resigned from the society because he disagreed with its 2007 official statement that the evidence of man-made global warning is "incontrovertible." (Dr. Giaever, a retired Norwegian physicist, shared a 1973 Nobel Prize with two other physicists for their discoveries in quantum physics, a field unrelated to the science of climate change). But, the American Physical Society has 48,000 members. The resignation of one of them is hardly evidence of anything. To be fair, though, the late UC Santa Barbara emeritus professor Harold Lewis, a nuclear power specialist, also resigned from the society in 2010 because he too disagreed with its 2007 climate change statement. So in four years that's two. Out of 48,000.
