Letters to the editor for Nov. 3, 2009

Thanks to citizens

    To the editor:
As a student at Sonora High School, I would like to express my thanks to the citizens of our community for their outstanding support for the students of our school.
Their support is shown many times each week, as they attend the various sports events, drama productions, band concerts, club activities, etc. They give encouragement through their applause. We appreciate their cheering us on.
Another valuable and important contribution is demonstrated by their willingness to volunteer their time to help with the success of all these activities. They are also involved in fund-raising when there is a specific need at the school. The current drive for funds for “Trek for the Track” continues toward the goal.

Most balanced
To the editor:
Response to Jeannette Zweede’s Oct. 30 letter, “Fox Propaganda.”
Some people feel Fox News is the a “right wing” outlet. For anybody who believes this, I ask for any examples that include any hard news anchor.
Mrs. Zweede believes Fox News is trying to push an agenda. I, unlike her, hold proof that news outlets such as MSNBC, CNN, CBS and other so called “mainstream” media constantly and consistently push liberal ideals.
For instance, I watched CBS coverage of the 2008 Presidential election. A reporter actually cried when Obama won. That isn’t bias? Let’s take NBC: They have liberal guests that call people who are against the President’s agenda racist. How ridiculous is that notion? The only proof of such a claim is when they pan their cameras to some nut in the Tea Party protests that has a questionable sign. Now everybody that is involved is a racist? That lacks common sense not to mention journalistic integrity.
There is a recent Rasmussen poll that proved without a doubt that Fox News is the most balanced news station on air today. This fact is from an independent source. Every single debate I have seen on Fox News has both Democrats and Republicans at the same time, each having equal air time.
So, I ask, please, give one fact to support your opinion. If all the examples you have come from Bill O’Reilly or Glenn Beck, then you don’t have a leg to stand on. Those shows are named after the host for a reason. Last I checked, those are not hard news programs. Please correct me if I am wrong.

Bass is active, involved
To the editor:
Re: Jean Waltjen-De Mattos’ Oct. 27 letter, “Solve or resolve.”
Jean, I’m not sure where you got your impressions when you implied District 1 Supervisor Liz Bass was burned out, among other statements. Apparently you garnered them only from watching Channel 8?
It’s been my experience around town and the county that Liz Bass is way more involved in our community than you obviously think. She shows up at multiple senior meetings to further her understanding of senior issues in Sonora, Groveland, and other communities in this county. She also attends meetings in Calaveras and Amador counties.
Also, she is involved in voter education. She gets involved in transportation issues. She is very involved in working with the student population to offer mentoring and other assistance whenever she’s asked. She’s a former teacher and principal after all. So, to me, this shows no signs of burnout, and this is a testament to her commitment and dedication.
From what I’ve seen of Ms. Bass, I’m sure I’ve only touched the surface of her activities. These are only my personal observations. Indeed, all our supervisors get out into the community and are to be commended for all they do.
In conclusion, no matter what Ms. Bass’ appearance might be to you in her chair at the BOS meetings, my impression of her body language is that she is intently listening to every word. I have many retired and active teacher friends, and all great educators are great listeners.

Tax oil producers

To the editor:
I just learned that California is the only state that doesn’t tax oil producers within its own borders.
Other states not only tax their oil producers, that are taking oil by cheap leases from our ground and making obscene profits, but they include a clause preventing them from passing on those taxes to the consumer at the gas pump.
California is one of the biggest oil producers in the country and could solve the state’s deficit with that simple change. Right now, the company executives must be chuckling and handing out money to our officials right and left. They’ve curbed oil production to create a temporary shortage; gas prices have risen an average of 18 cents per gallon at the pump over the past two weeks. California has the highest gas prices in the nation, and here we sit, struggling with money problems.
What is wrong with this picture??
