Stop CCWD from upping rates

To the Editor:

This is an appeal to anyone who owns property in Calaveras County and is served by CCWD (Calaveras County Water District).  Unless a majority of customers protests, rates will be raised every year for the next five years, beginning this September.  This means that the minimum bi-monthly bill you will receive starting this fall will be $254 and will rise to $352.60 in 2017 — even if you use less than 1000 cubic feet of water!  This is a 25 percent water rate increase in the first year alone.

But you can protest, and “if a majority of the affected property owners file protests, the proposed rate changes will not be imposed,” according to CCWD.  Please go to www.ccwd.org to read more about this proposed rate increase and to download a sample protest letter. Mail it in time to arrive before July 10 and pass the word to your neighbors!

Agriculture instructor needed?

To the Editor:

I have been contacted by a colleague of mine who is an ag teacher, inquiring as to why Sonora High has an opening posted on the Cal-Agriculture Education website for an ag teacher. That is a good question, as we presently have a very qualified teacher with years of experience in the classroom as well as ranching. Why would Sonora High replace a teach with that much experience?

I have known Stan Kellogg since I was a very young child. When he was FFA advisor in Fresno, and I was a young 4-H member, he took me under his wing at Cow Palace and made me feel like one of his own. He has always been there for me, no matter what kind of help I needed. He is that way this his students and FFA kids. I have seen Stan during fair time, committing long hours to his students, and spending his own personal time on weekends and after school hours working with his FFA kids. I would be a shame for Sonora High to lose Stan as an ag teacher and FFA advisor. I sure hope this doesn’t mean they are cutting back the ag program at Sonora High.

A nation with the wrong priorities

To the Editor:

What is important to us?

Gas prices, elections, taxes, looking good, stocks, money, cars, etc.

How do we spend our time?

Faces buried in cell phones, ipads, iphones, computers, and TV.

Our goal is to live longer and enjoy the “good life.”

It’s okay to enjoy life but what is far more important than the above is: What happens when you die?

I’m glad you asked. When you die you either go to heaven or hell.

Heaven is an eternal place of no more death or mourning or crying or pain.

Hell is a place of eternal torment.

If you choose to make Jesus your Lord and Savior you go to heaven, if not you go to hell.

This is the truth of the matter.

So put down your cell phone, have a bologna sandwich and contemplate where you want to spend

eternity. You get to make that choice. I know that I am a sinner. I believe that Jesus died on a cross for my sins and rose from the dead. I invited Him into my heart as my Lord and Savior and try my best to be like Him. Because of Him I will spend eternity with Him in heaven. If you have also made Jesus your Lord and Savior, hallelujah! If you haven’t, please don’t take this lightly. Talk to a pastor or a Christian friend and find out more. Your life depends on it.
