Leave dogs at home
Sunday, July 19: Our weekly trip to Sunday morning breakfast and shopping at Wal-Mart and Safeway. Right away, 9 a.m., two different vehicles in the same row we parked in, two dogs in one car, one dog in another. Mind you, it’s not the top of the day yet, but still around 90 degrees.
The nice ladies at the front door of Wal-Mart say this happens everyday, dogs left in vehicles while their owners are in the air conditioned store shopping.
Please, we know you love your dogs, but leave them home on hot days. Just a few minutes could be an eternity in a 120-degree car. I have worked in veterinary hospitals for many years and have seen owners coming in with dogs collapsed because of being in a hot car. “ I was only in the store for a few minutes,” they say.
If you want to know how it feels, bring your winter coat and sit in your parked car for about 10 to 15 minutes, and I’ll guarantee you won’t be able to breath for long.
When you leave your car, your dog is watching you walk away and thinking, “Don’t leave me in here. It’s hot.”
The effects of overheating are similar to a stroke. Please leave your dog at home.
Urge Congress to vote no on HR 2749 (the Food Safety Enhancement Act of 2009).
Genetically modified foods have never been proven safe, and there is much evidence that they are not safe. Animals worldwide are dying from grazing on genetically modified plants.
World-renowned biologist Pushpa M. Bhargava, after reviewing more than 600 scientific journals, concludes that genetically modified organisms (GMOs) are a major contributor to the sharply deteriorating health of Americans.
The only published human feeding study has revealed that we may have potentially harmful GM proteins produced continuously inside us, transforming our intestinal bacteria into living pesticide factories, possibly for the rest of our lives.
The FDA has put the biotechnology industry in charge of GMO policy, and it has declared that no safety studies on GMOs are required. Rather, they claim the danger to the safety of our food is the small organic farmer. Under this bill, natural, healthy farms will be taken over by the government.
So, it is obvious that food safety is truly an issue. The fox is already in charge of the hen house. And now HR 2749 would give the fox even more power. Work to defeat it! Your health is at stake!
Urge your representative to vote NO on this insane draconian bill. Time is of the essence, because this bill is on fast track!

The mother deer are now fawning. It looks like another nice crop of fawns this year. Last year we had about nine fawns, with about three surviving. Predators and mostly inattentive drivers had run them down.
We had our first fawn show up last week. It was crying for its mother, but it has stopped. It probably did not survive.
Please pay extra attention while driving and give the deer a chance to survive. After all, they live in Tuolumne County too. Thanks.
I would like to thank the kind gentleman and his family who helped me jump start my car at Sonora Post Office parking lot July 9.
They will recall me as the English lady. I did not get his name, but I remember they lived in Copperopolis.
It is caring people like you, who not only prove there are wonderful people in this world, but make this “Brit” very proud to call Sonora her home.
Our new director of environmental health in Tuolumne County, Robert Kostlivy, is quite new to our community and is showing us that he is here to help.
He has inherited very big issues (Don Pedro, Jamestown, etc.) that pre-existed his appointment.
I am a local general contractor in Groveland area, and have had a few business dealings with him (including his personal inspections of my commercial and residential work).
Recently I had a mold-mildew issue at one of my residential job sites. The property owner and I were working through the situation and Rob chose to take time out of his busy day to visit the job site, all the way up here in Groveland. With his expertise, he helped us to work through the issue.
Everything worked out well.
Rob is a well-educated man in his field and comes to us with a very good set of credentials. Please support his efforts.
