Letters to the editor for Dec. 9, 2011

Occupy America and income inequality

To the Editor:
In response to Kathleen Liedlich’s letter on Nov. 30 that explained the Occupy Sonora positions, I have to comment. What exactly is income inequality and what is there to solve? People are paid by the value they bring to any given endeavor. In a pro golf tournament, the winner earns the most, well over a million. Last place makes about $12,000. What would Occupy people do? Pay everyone the same? Doctors earn more than janitors, so what? You can’t make poor people rich by taking from the rich. I read that one of their “demands” from Occupy Wall Street was that “everyone gets a living wage, even if you don’t work.” Now where will this money come from exactly? Oh, that’s right the government will borrow it, and taxpayers will pay more. As Margaret Thatcher said, “the trouble with Socialism is that eventually you run out of other people’s money.”
As for “restoring” Democracy. Please, a pure Democracy always leads to tyranny of the majority. America is a Republic to protect the individual and individual property rights. We are not a collective, nor should we strive to be. An anonymous source said, “A Democracy is nothing more than mob rule, where 51 percent of the people may take away the rights of the other 49.”
