Letters to the editor for Dec. 23, 2013

Lamplight Tours
a success

To the Editor:

We at Friends of Columbia State Historic Park would like to express our sincere thanks to all who donated to the Lamplight Tours event at Columbia State Historic Park.

Unfortunately, the weather did not allow us perform our Christmas play in the streets of downtown Columbia for two as originally planned. Out of concern for the safety of our guest and actors, we were forced to cancel Saturday’s performance due to the snow on our roads and the streets of downtown Columbia. We do appreciate all who donated their ticket money to Friends even though the event was cancelled.

To those I salute you.

Cheers and happy holidays!

CCWD does it again

To the Editor:

It never ceases to amaze me how companies, agencies, or in this case, the Calaveras County Water District, can financially affect customers or ratepayers around the holidays.

West Calaveras County ratepayers have already received their water/wastewater bills reflecting the full rate increase effective September 2013 and due December 18, 2013. Ebbetts Pass bills will be mailed December 23, 2013, two days before Christmas, and will be due January 21, 2014.

CCWD hopes that we all are so busy shopping, visiting and cooking that the bills won’t even be opened until the last minute. We won’t have or make the time to think about the 25 percent rate increase, so painfully inflicted upon the ratepayers by a vote of 4-to-1 by the directors. Voting “Yes” were Dennis Dooley, District 4, Jeff Davidson, District 5, Scott Ratterman, District 1 and Don Stump, District 3. Voting “No” was Bob Dean, District 2.

But ratepayers still won’t feel the full impact of the rate increase until we start watering again, in Spring 2014. Tier increases for water usage were part of the Rate Increase. Summer, 2014 will pass and, then, September 1, 2014 will be here with another rate increase of 15 percent!

The elected CCWD directors contend that they represented and acted on the behalf of the ratepayers.

What am I missing in their decision?
