To the Editor:
This letter offers an eight-sentence book review.
Just published, “Christian Nation,” by Frederic Rich, is a novel, a work of fiction. It lays out in fairly vivid detail how America is taken over by Christian fundamentalists, transforming the country into a theocracy.
The fiction begins when McCain and Palin defeat Obama and Biden in the 2008 election. McCain dies, and Sarah Palin becomes president. The takeover is mostly peaceful until in 2016 a group of blue states tries to secede. Finally, only New York holds out, and open war ensues. Like any good book review, this one will not review the ending.
Rich says this book is a caution, not a prediction. But for someone taking it at all seriously, it could be pretty frightening.
What may be of interest to some readers is that the theological underpinning for the takeover movement, known as Christian Reconstructionism, originated at the Chalcedon Foundation, as the book makes clear, headquartered a dozen or so miles up the road in tiny Vallecito. Who would’ve thought?
