Letters to the editor for April 30, 2010 |
Political poison To the editor: It’s ugly to read letters from people so entangled in political poison, name calling and blaming the other guy, as far back as Reagan and Clinton, for our country’s woes. Mary Matzek Murphys Intent questioned To the editor: The only thing suspicious about Earl Randall’s April 27 letter, “Looks suspicious,” is the letter writer’s intent. I assume that Mr. Randall is attempting to paint Randy Hanvelt as a big city outsider. If the letter writer really wants to know more about Mr. Hanvelt, then I encourage him to visit RandyHanvelt.com. Or, the letter writer could have attended a candidate forum. The Tuolumne County Farm Bureau and Chamber of Commerce both held forums last week that were well publicized by this paper. Maybe an open-ended letter to the newspaper is not the best way to do research or get questions answered, but you did at least get me to respond, Mr. Randall. Shaun Crook Jamestown Davis for assessor To the editor: As the recently retired county assessor, I am interested in the upcoming election. During my 30-plus years in the Assessor’s Office, 10 as assessor, I have gained considerable knowledge as to what type of a person it takes to successfully lead the office. That person is Leslie Davis. I retired last year with peace of mind, knowing that my assistant assessor, Leslie, was more than qualified to take the reins. Leslie is the opposite of her opponent, who has no assessment or appraisal experience. Leslie’s challenger did not earn a college degree, and is lacking the knowledge and experience necessary to lead the Assessor’s Office. Without any qualifications to be assessor, Leslie’s opponent is running a negative campaign, which has focused on making false accusations about Leslie and the Assessor’s Office. In contrast, Leslie has more than 20 years of experience in all phases of the Assessor’s Office and earned a master’s degree in public administration. She is an advanced appraiser for property tax purposes and has a professional appraiser’s designation from the Appraisal Institute. Leslie is a gifted teacher, who has established staff training that exceeds anything the office has had in the past. One example of her leadership: She authored a strategic plan for the Assessor’s Office well before the county itself had developed a strategic plan. Leslie is one of the brightest individuals that I have ever met, and Calaveras County is blessed to have her running for public office. I strongly endorse her candidacy and, on June 8, I encourage you to vote for Leslie Davis to be your next assessor. Randy Metzger San Andreas |
