Sierra foothills in the spring

To the Editor:
There are places on this earth as beautiful as, but there is no place on this earth more beautiful than our Sierra Foothills in the spring.

No free lunch

To the Editor:
Since the omnipotent one, President Obama, took office his battle cry has been to bash George Bush. President Bush has been Obama’s scapegoat for everything wrong in the United States.
Remember in his campaign speech how he would criticize Bush for Guantanamo Bay Prison. Now I find it ironic that the prison is still open. He realized no country would take these barbarians into their country.
Another lie Obama told is that he would scale back the Afghanistan War effort. To his credit he has escalated the troop numbers. Bush’s selection of General Petreaus was also scrutinized. Now Obama adores the general.
The mortgage meltdown was also on Bush, even though he went to Congress 17 times to stop Freddie Mac and Fannie Mae. He was stopped by then Senators Obama, Reid, Dodd and Frank. Why would Obama stop such actions? He received $250,000 in campaign contributions from Freddie Mac and Fannie Mae.
President Obama’s biggest mistake has been putting health care reform before job creation.
Since he has taken office, the unemployment rate has gone from 8 to 10 percent. Our deficit has more than doubled.
Health care reform is needed, but not at this time. Twenty-eight states have appealed his bill. A federal judge has ruled it unconstitutional. Instead of complying with this mandate, Obama has no response.
President Obama has stated covering 30 million uninsured Americans will cost the government nothing. The Heritage Foundation claims costs could be a trillion.
My father once told me there is no such thing as a free lunch. We will pay for these entitlements.

Crescent City harbor/boats

To the Editor:
Thank you for your article on the damage done to the harbor and the fishing boats in the coastal town of Crescent City. I lived in Crescent City from 1963 to 1985 and have seen not only the boat basin being built, but have seen the many boats, some which are listed in your article, ride high upon the water, proudly providing not only a living to some, but also an enjoyment to others. To see the remains of these boats brought to the surface is sad for all who remember them when they were working fishing boats. It is like finding a loved one who has perished in the sea, as a past resident of Crescent City. They have survived through the 1964 Tsunami, they will survive again.
I pray for Japan, Weep for it’s loss of life and have praise for the heroism of its people.

March veterans tribute

To the Editor:
American Veterans Traveling Tribute (AVTT) had the opportunity to bring our Cost of Freedom Tribute to the Mother Lode Fairgrounds from March 23 to 27 of this year.
We at AVTT want to extend our appreciation to the community for hosting us and for participating in the Tribute events that occurred throughout the week. Sonora proved to be a community filled with patriots and those that truly understand what it means to honor, respect and remember our American heroes. Even though the weather was not ideal, many toughed it out and still came to pay their respects. We would like to extend a special thank you to the Vietnam Veterans of America Chapter 391 of Sonora who sponsored the event for the community. Their hard work and dedication to this event was unwavering and it was because of them that the event was a success, despite the poor weather.
Thank you for welcoming us into your community and thank you for taking the time to honor our active duty, veteran and fallen heroes. We very much look forward to coming back to Sonora in the future. Respectfully, American Veterans Traveling Tribute www.avtt.org
