Deck stacked against middle-class America
To the Editor:
A recent Letter to the Editor titled “Poverty stems from life choices,” made the often-heard charge that people choose to be unemployed and poor and it threw in the usual references to Obama and Marxism. It stated “Our system is as fair as human beings can make it.” The real truth is that the deck is becoming increasingly stacked against middle-class Americans.
Up to the 1970s, business and industry paid a fair share of our national tax needs, up to 39 percent. But now big oil and big business pay little or no taxes, and get government subsidies for supposed needs while making record breaking profits and hiding them in tax-free schemes and foreign banks. Under both Presidents Bush, the rich were given tax breaks and middle class Americans were left carrying more of the burden. The truth is big oil and big business have the politicians in their pockets, and even write the legislation that is supposed to protect consumers. This year a record number of Congressmen are millionaires (52 percent). They have no interest in legislation to help the common man because it does not line their pocket. They are out of touch with the problems of women, the poor, minorities and the unemployed.
President Obama has made changes that brought us out of the Bush and big bank-caused recession and he has cut the deficit in half in January. The stock market is the highest it has ever been (1600). But the profit has gone to the top 1 percent of the people. Politicians (especially Republicans) serve the wealthy, and our political and economic system is far from fair! So get active politically and work for change!
