Q&A: What does the future hold at TUD?

Tuolumne Utilities District General Manager Tom Scesa and spokeswoman Lisa Westbrook sat down with opinion page editor Craig Cassidy this week to discuss a range of topics, including the district’s water supply, TUD’s financial situation, infrastructure needs, possible rate increases, and long-range planning.

For background: Part of the conversation focused on water stored behind Pinecrest and Lyons reservoirs, which usually fill to the brim (referred to here as “fill and spill”).

The two reservoirs, while storing water for 44,000 Tuolumne County residents, are owned and operated by Pacific Gas and Electric and used for hydroelectric power generation.

The first part of this hour-long interview ran Friday.

It also was the week in which a legislative battle was heating up in Sacramento over a bill that would require all but a very few children to receive standard childhood vaccinations before enrolling in school. So, what better time to reiterate the importance of getting children vaccinated for preventable diseases.

Guest opinion: Agencies adding land doesn’t add up

Rep. Tom McClintock, R-Twain Harte, chairman of the Federal Lands Subcommittee, House Natural Resources Committee, had the following to say at an oversight hearing Wednesday on federal lands acquisition.

The Federal Lands subcommittee meets today to review federal land acquisition policies and their impact on communities and the environment.

Last month, this subcommittee received testimony from the government’s land management agencies regarding their 2016 budget requests. All expressed a burning desire to vastly increase their holdings, while admitting to large and growing backlogs of deferred maintenance.
