Margaret (Feldman) Cataldo

Oct. 4, 1943 — June 24, 2012

Sonora resident Margaret (Feldman) Cataldo died June 24 at home. She was 68.

Mrs. Cataldo was born in New York, N.Y. 

She was a registered nurse for 20 years and moved to Sonora five years ago. She enjoyed dogs and traveling. 

She is survived by by her children, Wayne Miller, of Fremont, Cassie Freeman, of Newman, Ga., Sharon Fenneran, of Loganville, Ga., Melissa Snapp, of Loganville, Ga., Michelle Eldridge, of Lawrenceville, Ga.; her brothers, Albert Feldman and Alexander Feldman; and 12 grandchildren.

Services to be held at a later date.

Thomas H. Clack Sr.

Sept. 19, 1922 — June 30, 2012

Sonora resident Thomas H. Clack Sr. died Saturday at Avalon Care Center of Sonora. He was 89.

Mr. Clack was born in Huttig, Ark., to Henry Thomas and Della (Johnson) Clack. 

He grew up in Arkansas and Louisiana. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1942 during World War II, serving in both the Atlantic and Pacific. He was assigned to the armored guard and protected merchant marine fleets and liberty ships.

He married Rhoda Lyall in 1945 and settled in Petaluma. He worked in an ice plant before moving to Philo to work in a sawmill. 

He was a millwright for many years and ended his career in Keystone in western Tuolumne County as the mill superintendent, a position he held for 14 years. He was a member of the Lumber and Sawmill Workers Union. 

He enjoyed golf, camping, and house-boating on the Sacramento River.

Mr. Clack is survived by his wife of 67 years, Rhoda Clack, of Sonora; his sons, Robert Clack, of Sonora, Timothy Clack, of N.M., and Thomas H. Clack Jr., of Santa Maria; his grandchildren, Jennifer Clack and Sabrina Showers; and four great-grandchildren.

No services will be held.

Glenn Joseph Lopez

May 15, 1951— June 28, 2012

Sonora resident Glenn Joseph Lopez died June 28 at his home. He was 61.

Mr. Lopez was born in Oakland to Clarence and Edna Lopez.

He served in the U.S. Navy during the Vietnam War and later worked as a drywall finisher for 40 years. 

He moved to Sonora from the Bay Area 25 years ago. He enjoyed hot rods, vintage cars and summer vacations at Kennedy Meadows and Hawaii. 

He is survived by his wife of 32 years, Kimberly Lopez, of Sonora; his parents, Clarence and Edna Lopez, of Sonora; his children, Stacy Klein, of Sonora, and Joe Lopez, of Copperopolis; his son-in-law, Jack Klein; his daughter-in-law, Megan Lopez; his father and mother-in-law, Bud and Kay Breland; his siblings, Christina Whitney and Ken Lopez; and his grandchildren Tyler and Hannah Klein.

A donation can be made to Sonora Regional Medical Center cancer fund, 1000 Greenley Road, Sonora, or Hospice of the Sierra, 20100 Cedar Road North, Sonora.

A memorial service will be held at 11:30 a.m. Saturday at Terzich and Wilson Funeral Home, which is handling arrangements. 

A burial will be held at Dambacher Mountain Memorial in Sonora.

William James
Rivers Sr.

Nov. 27, 1944 — June 23, 2012

Arnold resident William James Rivers Sr. died June 23 at his home. He was 67.

Mr. Rivers was born in Washington, D.C., to William Jacocks Rivers Sr. and Jessie (Willis) Rivers. 

He was a long-time resident of the area and built many homes here. He enjoyed the outdoors, especially Calaveras Big Trees State Park and Yosemite National Park.

Mr. Rivers was preceded in death by his mother, Jessie Rivers, in 2011; and his brother, William Jacocks Rivers Jr., in 1981.

He is survived by his father, William Jacocks Rivers Sr., of Leesburg, Ga.; his son, William James Rivers Jr., of Alexandria, Va.; his stepchildren, Jaime LeMessurier, of Gig Harbor, Wash., and Carey Bird, of Copperopolis; his daughter-in-law, Eileen Rivers; his son-in-law, Landon Bird; his siblings, Wilfred Wilson Rivers, of Texas, and Suzanne Purvis, of Leesburg, Ga.; and his four grandchildren, Travis Rivers, Jordan Bird, Mack Bird and Quincy Bird. 

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the American Diabetes Association, 2720 Gateway Oaks Drive, Sacramento, or the National Recreation and Park Association, 22377 Belmont Ridge Road, Ashburn, Va.

A private memorial service will be held.

William Ray ‘Bill’ Smith

Nov. 12, 1925 — June 23, 2012

Sonora resident William Ray “Bill” Smith died at his home June 23. He was 86. 

Mr. Smith was born in in Kokomo, Ind., to Ben and Eva Smith.

He served in the U.S. Army in the Pacific in World War II. He worked as an airplane mechanic and trained to be a pilot. After the war, he owned a machine business in Palo Alto for 49 years. 

He retired to Sonora, where he lived for 23 years. 

He was a pilot and liked flying to Mexico on fishing trips. He enjoyed sports, including golfing, bowling and baseball.

He enjoyed traveling the United States and Canada in his motor home.

Mr. Smith is survived by his wife of 68 years, Nora I. Smith, of Sonora; his daughters, Darla Wathet, of Sonora and Linda Zirbes, of Prunedale; his son-in-law, George Zirbes; his siblings, Bob Smith and Barbara Smith; his grandchildren, Barry, Tiffany, Shelly, Joel, Samantha, and Nicolle; and 16 great-grandchildren. 

No services will he held.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Hospice of the Sierra.

Constance ‘Dee’ (Laretta) Wakefield

Nov. 5, 1921 — June 28, 2012

Sonora resident Constance “Dee” (Laretta) Wakefield died June 28 at home. She was 90.

Mrs. Wakefield was born in West Virginia and moved to Sonora from Hayward 28 years ago. 

She worked as a seamstress at Mills College in Oakland. She was a member of Jehovah’s Witnesses and enjoyed traveling and shopping.

She is survived by her husband of 28 years, Wilbur “Bill” Wakefield, of Sonora; her children, Patricia Pearce, of Sonora, and Dennis Potesta, of Minden, Nev.; seven grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

No services will be held.

Trenton Edward Wann

Sept. 25, 1917 — July 1, 2012

Tuolumne resident Trenton Edward Wann died Sunday at his his home. He was 94.

Mr. Wann was born in Standard to Thomas and Dora Wann, who moved from Texas to Tuolumne to start the West Side Lumber Mill.

He attended Summerville elementary and high schools. He married Ruby Comer in 1937, they had two children and divorced in 1945. He worked as a welder’s foreman in Marin County during World War II. 

He met his second wife, Helen Larios, in 1955. He worked at West Side Lumber Co. until it closed in 1961. He then worked for Pickering Lumber Co. in Standard until his retirement in 1980. His granddaughter Dona Owings and her husband, Gary, cared for him in later life.

He enjoyed track, math, poetry, camping, stream fishing, and vacations to Lake Tahoe with his wife.

Mr. Wann was preceded in death by his wife, Helen Larios; his parents, Thomas and Dora Wann; his siblings, Emily Montgomery, Quintilla Davidson, Lola Ingram, Evans Wann, Phylena Muncy, Chyloe Hunter, Frances Domser Couture, Pearl Anderson, Keith Wann and Estes Wann.

He is survived by his children, Janet Moreno, of San Pablo, and Allan Wann, of Petaluma; his son-in-law, Rojelio Moreno; his daughter-in-law, Kathy Wann; 10 grandchildren; 30 great-grandchildren; 25 great-great-grandchildren, and his friend of 74 years, Walter Strong. 

A graveside service will be held at noon Saturday at Carters Cemetery in Tuolumne.

Alma Florence
(Hansen) Cox

July 18, 1920 — June 28, 2012

Longtime Sonora resident Alma Florence (Hansen) Cox died June 28 at Sonora Regional Medical Center. She was 91.

Mrs. Cox was born in San Francisco. She attending Lick Wilmerding High School in San Francisco, focusing on home economics. 

She married Perry Cox on June 30, 1951. She lived in Sonora from 1977 until she moved to Angels Camp in 2004. She enjoyed sewing, crocheting and needlework. She was a member of St. Matthew Lutheran Church. 

She was preceded in death by her husband, Perry Cox, in 2002.

She is survived by her children, Robert Cox, of Murphys, and James Cox, of Baypoint; her brother, Richard Hansen, of Rancho Cordova; her sister-in-law, Betty Hansen; and her grandsons, Sean Cox, of Chico, and Elliot Cox, of Angels Camp. 

A visitation will be held from 9 to 11 a.m. Friday at Heuton Memorial Chapel.

Peter Mario Barsotti

July 2, 1947 — June 23, 2012

Groveland resident Peter Mario Barsotti died June 23 at California Pacific Medical Center in San Francisco. He was 64. 

Mr. Barsotti was born in Berkeley. 

He grew up in the Bay Area and graduated from Bishop O’Dowd High School before attending Santa Clara University on an academic scholarship. He later transferred to University of California, Berkeley. 

He joined a rock and roll band in the 1960s which influenced his career. He worked for Bill Graham as a music producer and creative director at Bill Graham Presents for many years. He worked on shows such as Day on the Green and Lollapalooza and helped with the filming of “The Last Waltz” at the Winterland Ballroom in San Francisco. 

Mr. Barsotti retired in 2000 to his Spinning Wheel Ranch in Groveland, where he also owned the Iron Door Saloon. 

He was a sport enthusiast and played in Berkeley’s Little League. He especially enjoyed gardening and landscaping his ranch.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Bettike (Holmes) Barsotti, of Groveland; and his mother, Florence Barsotti, of San Francisco.

He is survived by his second wife, Deborah (Bradway) Barsotti, of Groveland; his father, Mario Barsotti, of San Francisco; his children, Dharma Barsotti, Jessica Barsotti, Corinna Loh, Matthew Barsotti, and Jasper Barsotti; his brothers, Steven Barsotti, David Barsotti, Robert Barsotti, and Mark Barsotti; and six grandchildren.

Donations can be made to either the Arts and Music Education in the Groveland School District or the Bettike Foundation, P.O. Box 866, Groveland.

Visitation will be held from noon to 4 p.m. Sunday through Tuesday at Vichara Monastery in Greeley Hill. 

A public memorial will be held from 1 to 3 p.m. July 14 at Mary Laveroni Community Park in Groveland.

Rosie ‘Baby’ Acosta Neaves Hirales

Nov. 29 1935 — June 28, 2012

Jamestown resident Rosie “Baby” Acosta Neaves Hirales died June 28 at Sonora Regional Medical Center. She was 76.

Mrs. Hirales was born in Los Angeles.

She was a homemaker and lived in Jamestown for 20 years. She enjoyed casinos, camping, barbecues and vacationing in Mexico.  

She was preceded in death by her parents, Trinidad and Virginia Acosta; her first husband, Dwain Neaves, in 2000; her son, James Neaves, in 2002, her sister, Ermy Meza; and her brother, Moises Acosta.

She is survived by her husband, Jesus B. “Jess” Hirales, of Jamestown, her daughters, Donna Ashorn, of Apple Valley, and Cathy Rochall, of Perris; her siblings, Raymond Acosta, Eva Barragan, Mary Luna, Connie Rodriguez, Leah Sedeno and Alice Acosta; grandchildren, Louie, Ricky, Brandi, Renee, Latina, Rebecca and Roberto; and 10 great-grandchildren. 

A memorial service will be held from 6 to 8:30 p.m. Thursday at Todd’s Memorial Chapel in Claremont.

Mass will be celebrated at 9 a.m. Friday at St. Martha’s Catholic Church in Southern California. She will be buried at Rose Hills Memorial Park in Whittier.

Marshall Jay Rickard

Sept. 3. 1924 — May 31, 2012

Sonora resident Marshall Jay Rickard died at Doctors Medical Center in Modesto. He was 87. 

Mr. Rickard was born on Balboa Island. He was a Merchant Marine during World War II, a reserve policeman in Salinas, and spent most of his life working retail/management in Salinas, Visalia, and Merced. 

He lived in Los Osos for 20 years before moving to Sonora six years ago.

He was a boat builder, carpenter and craftsman. He enjoyed ocean fishing, hunting, camping, bridge and dogs. He enjoyed boating and in 1978 sailed across the Pacific Ocean with his wife, June, and son, Tim, in a boat he built himself. 

Mr. Rickard was preceded in death by his wife of 66 years, June Regina Rickard, in 2011; his children, Marshall Rickard Jr., of San Jose,  Maureen V. Coulson, of Winton; and his grandson, Nicolas M. Rickard, of Sonora.

He is survived by his children, Douglas Rickard, of Placerville, Kate Tenney, of Modesto, Stephen Rickard, of Hawaii, Rosemary May of Morro Bay, Bryan Rickard, of Sacramento, Tim Rickard, of Sonora, and Jon Rickard, of Modesto; four daughters-in-law, many grandchildren and great-grandchildren. 

A private burial service at sea will be held at a later date.

Neptune Society of Central California in Modesto is handling arrangements.

Fred Leonard Grant Jr.

Aug. 29, 1922 — June 23, 2012

Sonora resident Fred Leonard Grant Jr. died Saturday at Sonora Regional Medical Center. He was 89.

Mr. Grant was born in Sherman in Los Angeles County, to parents Fred and Hazel (Gilpatrick) Grant. He grew up in Topanga Canyon. 

He graduated from Canoga Park High School, where he met his future wife, Barbara Jean Zumwalt. They wed on Jan. 24, 1942, and were married for 70 years. 

Mr. Grant worked at North American Aircraft building airplanes until Pearl Harbor. He then enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Corps. He served as a transport pilot in the South Pacific during World War II. 

After the war he had a farm in Hanford. He worked for the U.S. Postal Service and later the Department of Motor Vehicles, serving as a manager for more than 30 years. He was a Sonora resident for 49 years. 

He was a member of Sonora United Methodist Church and enjoyed gardening and animals, particularly dogs, horses, cats and birds. 

He was preceded in death by his parents.

He is survived by his wife, Barbara (Zumwalt) Grant, of Sonora; his children, Ginia Klamecki, of Minneapolis, Minn., Fred Grant III, of Paris, Texas, Charles Grant, of Chico, and Christina Pehrson, of Sonora.; daughters-in-law Minnie Grant, and Jennifer Grant; and son-in-law Barney Klamecki; his sister, Virginia Nichols, of Sunland; his grandchildren, Amy and Michael Zawalski, of Lafayette, Carrie and Terrence Hendricks, of Minneapolis, Minn., Fred Grant IV of Texas, Cheri and Jeff Gillespie of Dublin, Jeanna and Darrel Frost, of Eureka, James Thorpe, of Klamath Falls, Ore., Rebekah Taylor, of Spokane, Wash., Benjamin Grant, of Klamath Falls, Ore., Kristen and Andrew Jarrett of Gilbert, Ariz., Melissa Grant, of Chico, Timothy Grant, of Chico, Jeff Pehrson and fiancee Jordan Auleb, of San Francisco, Heather and Jason Karney, of Sonora; 28 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Sonora United Methodist Church, 90 Yaney Ave., Sonora.

Seth Straws

June 8, 1923 — June 26, 2012

Columbia resident Seth Straws died June 26 at the Avalon Care Center of Sonora. He was 89.

Mr. Straws was born in Ogema, Wis. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II from 1942 to 1946 where he was stationed in the Panama Canal, Africa, and the Pacific. 

He owned Straws Concrete Pumping Company for 15 years. 

He enjoyed fishing, traveling, and was a member of Columbia Presbyterian Church. He married his wife, Mary Straws, of Plainview, Ark., in 1987.

Mr. Straws is survived by his wife, Mary; his children, Linda Van Vleck, of Plymouth, Mike Straws, of Sonora, Kenneth Straws, of Redding, and Rebecca Moore, of Pacifica; daughters-in-law Nancy Staws, Cindy Straws, and Kelly Straws; sons-in-law Lewis Van Vleck, and Dave Moore; siblings Harold Straws, of Tacoma, Wash., Aldan Straws, of Bremerton, Wash., Violet Erichsen, of Everett, Wash., Audrey Wilhelm, of Marysville, and Phyllis Redlands, of Sun City, Ariz.; 17 grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren. 

A donation in his name can be made to Church of the 49ers Monday night dinners.

Viewing is scheduled from 1 to 5 p.m. today at Heuton Memorial Chapel. 

Services will be held privately at Columbia City Cemetery.
