William Russell ‘Bill’ Barrentine

Feb. 1, 1954 — Aug. 6, 2012

William Russell “Bill” Barrentine died Aug. 6 at home after a four-year battle with pancreatic cancer. He was 58.

Mr. Barrentine was born in Bell in Los Angeles County. 

He moved to Sonora with his family in 1990 and opened Bill’s Hilltop Appliance Service after learning and practicing his trade is Southern California for 10 years with Montgomery Ward.

He closed his business in 2008 due to his illness. 

He enjoyed family outings in the desert and playing slots at Chicken Ranch and Black Oak casinos. 

Mr. Barrentine was preceded in death by his parents.

He is survived by his wife of 21 years, Vanessa Barrentine, of Sonora; his sons, Joseph and his fiancee, Leanna, of Sonora, Joshua and his fiancee, Karsen, of Sonora; his daughter, Christina de Jesus and her husband, Archie, of Norwalk; his siblings and their spouses, Diane and Lee Souders, of Columbia, Susan and Mike Hughes, of Shingle Springs, Nancy and Les Watson, of Fountain Valley, and John Lee Barrentine, of Lakewood; and his grandchildren, Xander Barrentine, of Tuolumne, Ruby de Jesus, of Norwalk, and Ganon Barrentine, of Sonora. 

Donations may be made to the Cancer Center at Sonora Regional Medical Center. 

A celebration of life will be held from noon to 3 p.m. Wednesday at the Columbia Volunteer Fire Department.

Mr. Franco was buried alongside his parents at St. James Catholic Cemetery in Jamestown.

Joseph Frederick     ‘Joe’ Cornell

Feb. 17, 1932 — Aug. 9, 2012

Groveland resident Joseph Frederick “Joe” Cornell died Aug. 9 at Sonora Regional Medical Center. He was 80.

Mr. Cornell was born in Denver and his family moved to California when he was 3 years old. 

He joined the U.S. Air Force at age 14 and was stationed in Okinawa the day before his 15th birthday. 

After serving in the military for four years, he worked as a fireman in Contra Costa County until 1979. 

Mr. Cornell then worked as a truck driver in San Jose and Groveland for several years. 

He enjoyed water skiing, gambling, motorcycles and restoring old cars.

He and his wife moved to Pine Mountain Lake 23 years ago. 

Mr. Cornell was preceded in death by his parents, Jay and Bessie Cornell; his siblings Clela, Arabelle, Nori, Clara, Bob, Rex and Jerry; and his father-in-law, Murray Van Patten. 

He is survived by his wife of 30 years, Priscilla Cornell, of Groveland; his children and their spouses, Jeanie Cornell, of San Jose, Nancy and Phil Vaca, of San Jose, Julie Cornell and Doug Tausheck, of Walnut Creek, and Joe and Diane Cornell, of Lafayette; his brother, Bill Cornell, of Cameron Park; his mother-in-law, Betty Van Patten, of Baldwinsville, N.Y.; his-sister-in-law, Pam Van Patten, of Liverpool, N.Y.; and former wife, Marge Cornell, of San Pablo; 11 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; and numerous nieces and nephews.

A memorial service with a fireman’s final tribute and military honor guard will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, at Sunset View Cemetery in El Cerrito.

A celebration of life will be held on 11 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 8, at Groveland Evangelical Free Church.

Mark Cameron Johnson

July 31, 1946— Aug. 8, 2012

Arnold resident Mark Cameron Johnson died Aug. 8 at home from complications of cancer. He was 66. 

Mr. Johnson was born in Phoenix and grew up in Coronado.

He joined the U.S. Air Force after graduating from high school. He served for 20 years before retiring to work in defense contracting with TRW in Sunnyvale, where he met his future wife, Laura Beach.

While working for TRW, he earned a bachelor’s degree in business management through extension classes at St. Mary’s College in Moraga. 

Mr. Johnson enjoyed model railroading and had been working on his dream model railroad layout until his death. His family and friends plan to complete it in his memory.

Mr. Johnson was preceded in death by his daughter, Lisa Johnson; and his father, Raymond Carl Johnson. 

He is survived by his wife of 23 years, Laura Beach, of Arnold; his daughter Angela Bateman and her husband, Jim, of Arnold, Md.; his mother, Marguerite Cook, of Coronado; his siblings and their spouses, Scott and Sue Johnson, of Phoenix, and Erika and Dennis Corradi, of San Francisco; three grandsons, Dylan Bateman and his wife, Millie, Evan Roe and Jesse Bateman; one great-granddaughter; and many cousins, nieces and nephews. 

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Ebbetts Pass Fire District, 1037 Blagen Road, Arnold, CA 95223; Sonora Regional Medical Center, 1000 Greenley Road, Sonora, CA 95370; or the Stanford Medical Center, 875 Blake Wilbur Drive, Stanford, CA 94305.

Betty Louise           (Volf) Tarbat

Oct. 6, 1925 — Aug. 12, 2012

Lifelong Calaveras County resident Betty Louise (Volf) Tarbat died Aug. 12 at Avalon Care Center of Sonora. 

Mrs. Tarbat was born in Altaville in a ranch house built by her parents and she was the youngest of 11 children. 

Mrs. Tarbat lived through the Depression but her parents were able to sustain the family by working their ranch.

She attended the Altaville Grammar School and Bret Harte High School.

She married her high school sweetheart, James E. Tarbat, after he returned from service in World War II. 

Mrs. Tarbat worked for Bank of America before starting her family.

She enjoyed gardening, trips to Tahoe with her sister, and the scenic areas of Calaveras County, especially the view of Bear Mountain from her backyard. 

Mrs. Tarbat was preceded in death by her husband, James; her parents, Frank and Mary Volf; and all 10 of her siblings. 

She is survived by her children and their spouses, Janet and Anthony Jordan, of Avery, Barry Tarbat, of San Andreas, and Chris and Angie Tarbat, of Mokelumne Hill; her grandchildren, James Tarbat, of Salt Lake City; Jannette Tarbat, of Little Rock, Ark., Jeff Jordan, of Avery, Janelle Williams and her husband, Lance, of Killeen, Texas,  and Courtney and Vince Tarbat, of Mokelumne Hill; and many nieces and nephews.

Private family services will be held at a later date.

Joan Marie Woodside

Jan. 4, 1949 — Aug. 12, 2012

Sugar Pine resident Joan Marie Woodside died Aug. 12 at home. She was 63.

Mrs. Woodside was born in Altadena. She and her husband moved to Sugar Pine 22 years because they enjoyed the area.

She was a homemaker throughout her life.

Mrs. Woodside is survived by her husband of 36 years, Barry E. Woodside, of Sugar Pine; her children, Katie L. Woodside, of Ponderosa, and Sarah M. Woodside; of Twain Harte; and her grandson, Stephen M. Woodside, of Twain Harte.

No services are planned at this time.

Harold William ‘Chief’ Redshaw

March 1, 1920 — Aug. 12, 2012

Sonora resident Harold William “Chief” Redshaw died Sunday at home. He was 92.

Mr. Redshaw was born in Bettendorf, Iowa, to Frank and Nellie Redshaw.

He met Betty Maxine Showalter at Gettert’s Roller Rink in 1941. They wed Oct. 16, 1943.

In 1959 they moved to California and retired to Sonora in April 1996.

Mr. Redshaw briefly worked for a 7-UP manufacturer in Tipton, Iowa before beginning a career as a tool and die maker. He worked at Uchdorff Co. in Davenport. He later worked as a salesman for Everett-Charles Inc. in Pomona. He retired as their trade show manager in 1985.

He was a member of Sons in Retirement and a 65-year member of the Trinity Masonic Lodge.

He was a skilled woodworker and received several first place awards for his craft. He continued to make furniture and wood pieces for his family even after being diagnosed with macular degeneration. 

He enjoyed traveling the United States with his wife.

Mr. Redshaw was preceded in death by his parents; and his brother, Earl Redshaw, in 1984.

He is survived by his wife of 68 years, Betty Redshaw, of Sonora; his daughter, Susan Redshaw Russel and her husband, John, of Sonora; and her grandson, Evan Russel, of Yosemite.

Donations can be made to Hospice of the Sierra, 20100 Cedar Road North, Sonora, 95370. 

Graveside services will be held 11 a.m. Monday at Carters Cemetery in Tuolumne.

Marie C. Stahn

May 12, 1923 — Aug. 10, 2012

Sonora resident Marie C. Stahn died Aug. 10 at Sonora Regional Medical Center. She was 89.

Mrs. Stahn was born in San Fernando Valley.

She moved to Sonora in 1982 after retiring from the Balboa Golf Course where she worked for more than 20 years.

She enjoyed playing bingo, cards and occasional trips to the casino.

She is survived by her daughter, Sylvia Dragecevich, of Sonora; her sister, Jeanette Johnson, of Antioch; her grandchildren and their spouses, Carl Dragecevich, of Sonora, Cindy and Don Kern, of Oakland, and Toni and Damon Franklin, of Ohio; two great-grandchildren; one niece; and numerous other relatives.

Lowell Rayburn
‘Les’ Lester

May 31, 1931 — Aug. 10, 2012

Sonora resident Lowell Rayburn “Les” Lester died Friday at Sonora Regional Medical Center. He was 81. 

Mr. Lester was born in South Point, Ohio, and graduated from South Point High School in May 1949. 

He graduated with an associate’s degree from Hartnell College in Salinas in 1955. 

He served in the U.S. Navy from July 1949 to April 1953. He graduated from Great Lakes Naval Training Center and was transferred to several locations. He worked on U2 reconnaissance planes at Sanford Naval Air Station in Florida where he was attached to Photographic Squadron VJ-62, which was top secret at the time. 

He married June Ione Dani on July 23, 1952.

Mr. Lester worked at an auto body and fender repair shop in Salinas and Monterey. He also owned his own auto body business for several years.

He became a vocational auto body and fender instructor for the California Department of Corrections in 1964. He worked at Sierra Conservation Center until retirement in 1987.

He sponsored an Alcohol Anonymous Group while at Sierra Conservation Center. 

In 1979 he began volunteering with the Greater Yosemite Council Boy Scouts of America Cub Scout Pack 563 and eventually became Cubmaster. He also worked with Boy Scout Troop 563 as their assistant Scoutmaster. 

Mr. Lester helped take a group of boys to the World Jamboree in Calgary, Alberta, Canada, in July 1983. He transported equipment to the Boy Scouts National Jamboree at Fort A.P. Hill, Va. in 1993 and 1997.

He received the Boy Scouts of America Silver Beaver Award in January 1988 and received the Catholic Church Bronze Pelican Award for Scouting.

Mr. Lester was preceded in death by his parents, Olive and King Lester; and his brother, James Lester.

He is survived by his wife of 60 years, June Lester, of Sonora; his siblings and their spouses, Gilbert and Sally Lester, of Ohio, Ruth and Tom Clark, of Tennessee, Cecil and Janet Lester, and Sue Lester, all of Ohio. 

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Greater Yosemite Council, Boy Scouts of America, 4031 Technology Drive, Modesto, 95356.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday, with a funeral at 11 a.m. Friday at Terzich and Wilson Funeral Home with a burial immediately following at Dambacher Mountain Memorial.

Rita (DeGiobbi) Muzzi

April 12, 1915 — July 25, 2012

Tuolumne native Rita (DeGiobbi) Muzzi died July 25 at the Sonora Regional Medical Center long term care unit. She was 97.

Mrs. Muzzi was born in Tuolumne to Joseph and Mary DeGiobbi and lived in Tuolumne County all her life. 

She married Pete Muzzi in September 1930. In 1945 they purchased the Sonora Liquor Store, which they ran for more than 30 years. It was next to a gas station owned by her brother, Ed DeGiobbi.

She and her husband raised their nephews, Don and Elmer DeGiobbi. 

Mrs. Muzzi began volunteering at Sierra Hospital in 1950, where she was a charter member, and later at Tuolumne General Hospital. She worked as a floor keeper to make patients comfortable by delivering meals and freshening flowers. 

She was a member of St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, Sierra Rebekah Lodge 245, and Native Daughters of the Golden West.

She enjoyed camping, fishing, cooking and growing vegetables and flowers in her garden. 

Mrs. Muzzi was preceded in death by her husband of 58 years, Pete Muzzi, in 1988; and four brothers, Roy, Ed, Joe and Nate DeGiobbi.

She is survived by her sister, Olympia Greene, of Tracy, the two nephews she raised, Don DeGiobbi, of Pleasant Hill, and Elmer and his wife, Janette DeGiobbi, of Sonora; three nieces and numerous great-nieces and great-nephews. 

Donations can be made to Native Daughters of the Golden West, Golden Era Chapter, P.O. Box 2076, Columbia, 95351.

A funeral will be held at 11 a.m., Saturday at Heuton Memorial Chapel, with a burial following at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church.

Heather Lee Thomason

Jan. 9, 1987 — Aug. 5, 2012

Sonora resident Heather Thomason died Aug. 5 at Sutter Memorial Hospital in Sacramento due to a sudden illness. She was 25.

Ms. Thomason lived in the Sonora area her entire life. 

She graduated from Summerville High School in 2005 and was a waitress at Black Oak Casino for five years.

She enjoyed river rafting, camping, boating and fitness. 

Ms. Thomason was preceded in death by her uncles, Steve Flud and Jeff Black; and her great-uncle, Don O’Connelly.

She is survived by her mother, Ann Wever, of Sonora; her father; Ted Thomason, of Groveland; her sister, Michelle Thomason, of Long Beach; her grandmother, Juanita Thomason; her great-grandfather, Jim Cope, of San Jose; her cousins, with whom she was raised, Desiree, Shelby, Alex and Kathryn Flud, and K.C. Owens, all of Sonora; her boyfriend, Taylor Smith, of Sonora; an uncle, three aunts and several second and third cousins.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday at Sierra Bible Church with a reception immediately following at the Sonora Moose Lodge.

Robert George ‘Bob’ Calvert

Oct. 28, 1928 — Aug. 12, 2012

Jamestown resident Robert George “Bob” Calvert died Sunday at Sonora Regional Medical Center. He was 83.

Mr. Calvert was born in Des Moines, Iowa, to Harold and Opal Calvert. 

His family moved to Phoenix, where his stepfather worked in the mining industry, when he was about 9 years old. 

They moved to the San Gabriel Valley during his teen years. He lived in Venice, Culver City and Newberry Park before settling in the Sonora area 42 years ago.

Calvert worked for many years as an auto parts expert and salesman, and worked at shops including Merrihew’s Auto Parts and Napa Auto Parts. 

He also worked as a pilot driver for mobile home deliveries, Jim’s Christmas Trees during the holidays, and spent the past four years working surveillance at Chicken Ranch Casino.

He was a member Mother Lode Shriners Club, Aahmes Temple, East Belt Tuolumne Masonic Lodge No. 8 and a volunteer with the Jamestown Fire Department. 

He enjoyed all forms of motor vehicles, including cars, tractors and boats. 

He built his own sand buggy, which he enjoyed driving around Sand Mountain, Nev. He was restoring 1965 Chevrolet El Camino.

He enjoyed trips to the coast and Half Moon Bay with his wife, Joyce. 

Mr. Calvert was preceded in death by his daughters, Susan Stone, in April, and Cheryl Calvert, as an infant.

He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Joyce Calvert, of Jamestown; his children, Linda Calvert, of Coalinga, and Kathy Egger and her husband, Gary, of Tuolumne; half-sister, Pat Brazell and her husband, Dennis, of San Diego; his grandchildren and their spouses, Larry “Buck” Stone Jr., of Groveland, Heather and Jess Burkett, of Tuolumne, Robert and Cori Smith, of Coalinga, Travis and Rebecca Alderman and Theresa Alderman, of Belgrade, Mont.; and seven great-grandchildren. 

Visitation is scheduled today from 1 to 5 p.m. at Heuton Memorial Chapel.

A graveside service will be held at 9:30 a.m. Friday at Mountain Shadow Cemetery in Sonora.

Susan Marie Jensen

Aug. 8, 1948 — Aug. 5, 2012

Sonora resident Susan Marie Jensen died Aug. 5 at Avalon Care Center of Sonora. She was 64.

Ms. Jensen was born in Palo Alto to Charles and Betty Jensen.

She graduated from Sequoia High School in Redwood City in 1966. 

She moved to the Sonora area 20 years ago to be closer to family. 

She managed a Subway sandwich shop for four years and worked in the Black Oak Casino cafe for four years until her illness.

Ms. Jensen was preceded in death by her parents.

She is survived by her brother, Michael Jensen and his wife, Lorna; nephew Brian Jensen; niece, Katherine Jensen, all of San Carlos; her cousin, Linda Engles, of Michigan; and five great-nieces and nephews.

Mary Catherine (Gogan) Kelleher 

Feb. 26, 1933 — Aug. 8, 2012   

Sonora resident Mary Catherine (Gogan) Kelleher died Aug. 8 at John Muir Medical Center in Walnut Creek. She was 79.

Mrs. Kelleher was born in Lynn, Mass., to Edmond and Edmay (Burke) Gogan.

She lived in Danville for many years before settling in Sonora with her husband, Philip, in 1998.

She enjoyed quilting, gardening and was a member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church.

Mrs. Kelleher was preceded in death by husband, Phillip Kelleher, in 2003; her parents; and her sister, Eileen Swain.

She is survived by her children and their spouses, Ken and Regina Kelleher, of Turlock, Laura and Brian Kelly, of Danville, Lee Ann and Michael Kjar, of Orinda, Kristin and Ken Lynch, of Oxnard, Kathy and Dave Feller, of Roseville, Amy and Ryan Meineke, of Danville, and Robert Kelleher, of Livermore; her sister, Claire Hemingway, of Tulsa, Okla.; and grandchildren, Kathleen, Allison, Jack, Sean, Joe, Andrew, Jonathan, Amanda, Holly, Sarah, Jacob, Ben and Joshua.

Marsha L. Mathews

Nov. 27, 1946 — Aug. 3, 2012

Sonora resident Marsha L. Mathews died Aug. 3 at Sonora Regional Medical Center long term care unit. She was 66. 

Ms. Mathews was born in Orange County. She moved to the Sonora area seven years ago to be near family. 

She had varying occupations throughout her life, including Black Oak Casino and Walmart. 

She enjoyed gardening, the ocean, animals and caring for children. 

Ms. Mathews was preceded in death by her father, Woody Mathews, in 1989.

She is survived by her mother, Faye E. Mathews of Twain Harte; her son and daughter-in-law, James and Cindy Morante, of Davis; granddaughters, Samantha and Taylor Morante, of Davis; her sister and brother-in-law, Jan and Don Moncrieff, of Twain Harte; and one niece and nephew. 

A memorial service was held Aug. 12. 

Her ashes will be scattered in the Bay Area at a later date.

Jerry Lee Arnold

Oct. 30, 1948 — Aug. 6, 2012

Sonora resident Jerry Lee Arnold died Aug. 6 at Sonora Regional Medical Center. He was 63. 

Mr. Arnold was born in Dekalb, Ill. He moved to Sonora 23 years ago.

He served in the U.S. Navy in Vietnam. He was an American Legion life member. He was a member of the Missionary Baptist Church of Jamestown and the Moose Lodge.

He enjoyed watching programs about the military and singing karaoke. 

Mr. Arnold is survived by his wife of 27 years, Joan Arnold, of Sonora; his mother, Harriet Annette Royalty, of Dekalb, Ill.; his children, Jennifer Stone, of Jamestown, James Stone, of Sonora, Tony Stone, of Jamestown, and Tim Stone, of Modesto; 17 grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

Services will be held privately.

Rosemary Ann ‘Rose’ (Malone) Campana

Oct. 8, 1930 — Aug. 9, 2012

Sonora resident Rosemary Ann “Rose” (Malone) Campana died Thursday at Sonora Regional Medical Center. She was 81.

Mrs. Campana was born in San Francisco. 

She graduated from San Francisco State University and then taught elementary school for 20 years in the Pleasanton School District.

She also taught catechism and was a member of St. Augustine’s Parish Council until her retirement to Sonora in 1996.

After retiring, she joined the Red Hat Society and St. Patrick’s Catholic Church. 

Mrs. Campana volunteered with the Crystal Falls Fire Auxiliary and Soulsbyville Elementary School. She enjoyed reading. 

Mrs. Campana was preceded in death by her mother, Inez Malone, in 1954; her father, Joseph Patrick Malone, in 1992; and her sister, Patricia Bush, in 1994. 

She is survived by her husband of 59 years, James Peter Campana, of Sonora; her children, Lisa Garon, of Pleasanton, Teresa Campana, of Palenville, N.Y., Tina Wilbur, of Sonora, and Paul Campana, of Fremont; and grandchildren, Katie Garon, of London, England, Elisabeth Garon, of New Brunswick, N.J., Maria Wilbur, of Sonora, Cole Campana, of Fremont, and McKenzie Campana, of Menlo-Atherton.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. Friday, with a vigil following at 7 p.m. at Terzich and Wilson Funeral Home. 

A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Saturday, at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, Sonora.

An interment and memorial will be held at St. Augustine’s Catholic Cemetery in Pleasanton at a later date.

Andy A. Salem Jr.

July 8, 1930 — June 9, 2012

Arnold resident Andy A. Salem Jr. died June 9 at his home. He was 81.

Mr. Salem was born in New Haven, Conn., to parents who had immigrated from Italy.

His family moved to Southern California when he was 2. 

In 1952 he married Anne Scearce and they moved to the San Fernando Valley, where they lived for many years. They moved to Pleasanton in 1975. They lived there until 2004, when they moved to Arnold. 

He enjoyed traveling, fishing and reading. He was a member of the Sons in Retirement and St. Augustine’s Catholic Church, of Pleasanton. 

Mr. Salem was preceded in death by sister, Annette Horkan.

He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Anne Salem, of Arnold; his children and their spouses, Steve and Sandy Salem, of Pleasanton, Vince and Moya Salem, of Livermore, and Lisa and Charlie Giolzetti, of Danville; his sisters, Jeanette Aldi and Clara Williams; his grandchildren, Jeff, Michelle, Kyle, Brianni and Brandon; and three great-grandchildren.

A Mass was held at St. Augustine’s Catholic Church in Pleasanton.

Kenneth L. Walter

Feb. 1. 1937 — Aug. 9, 2012

Angels Camp resident Kenneth L. Walter died Thursday at home. He was 75.

Mr. Walter was born in Fresno to William and Leona Walter.

He served in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War. 

He moved to Angels Camp in 1969 for work as an estimator with the Pacific Gas & Electric Company, where he worked for 29 years.

He was a member of the Angels Gun Club.

Mr. Walter was preceded in death by his wife, Barbara Walter; his son, Greg Walter;  his parents; sister, Myrna Barlow; brother, Bob Walter.

He is survived by his daughter, Cathryn Walter; of Angels Camp; granddaughter, Brooke Hines, of Angels Camp; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at Cherokee Memorial Park at Highway 99 and Harney Lane in Lodi.

 Eden (Webber) Sanders

Jan. 3, 1946 — July 7, 2012

San Andreas resident  Eden (Webber) Sanders died July 7 at her home. She was 66.

Mrs. Sanders was born in San Francisco and moved to San Andreas 22 years ago.

She earned a bachelor’s degree in anthropology and psychology from the University of Hawaii in the mid-1970s. 

She worked as an office manager for Dave Bean Engineering Inc. for five years, the Utica Power Authority, and the Calaveras Public Power Authority for the past 10 years. She also worked as a project manager at Marlboro Corporation in Los Angeles for eight years. 

She was a member of the Early Day Gas Engine and Tractor Association. She was a certified instructor with the California Blacksmith’s Association and served as editor of the magazine. 

Mrs. Sanders is survived by her husband of 18 years, David Sanders, of San Andreas; her children and their spouses, David and Tracy Malandra, of San Andreas, Jennifer Sanders, of Paloma, and Andria and Carl Westphal, of Folsom; her siblings, Robert Dench, of Pennsylvania, and Blair Webber, of Oceanside; and four grandchildren.

A celebration of life will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 25, at Turner Park in San Andreas.

Alice E. Schroeder

March 9, 1927 - July 27, 2012

Former Sonora and Angels Camp resident Alice E. Schroeder died July 27 at Regency Place in Sacramento. She was 85.

Mrs. Schroeder was born in Fredonia, N.D. Her family moved to California, where she graduated from high school in Galt. 

After high school, she worked for Bank of America until marrying Milton E. Schroeder in 1947.

They later moved to Angels Camp and together they built and ran Angels’ Magic Wand Car Wash.

She sang with the Mothersingers group and was a member of the Columbia Presbyterian Church of the 49ers and worked in the church thrift shop for many years. 

She enjoyed sewing, quilting and weaving.

In 1999, they moved to Pacific Grove to enjoy their retirement at the Forest Hill Manor, where she established the Helping Hands group, making quilts for the homeless and needy.

Mrs. Schroeder was preceded in death by her husband of 66 years, in 2011. 

She is survived by her three children and their spouses, Thomas and Katheryn Schroeder, of West Sacramento, Kathryn Smith, of Merced, and Susan and William Zimlich, of Elk Grove; her brother, Kenneth Flaig, of Southern California; three grandchildren and their spouses, Judy and Denny George, of Sacramento, Andy and Jeannette Schroeder, of West Sacramento, and Joe Zimlich of San Jose; three great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Lillian Prudence (Donovan) Soper

March 12, 1918 — July 29, 2012

Calaveras County resident Lillian Prudence (Donovan) Soper died July 29 at Mark Twain St. Joseph’s Hospital in San Andreas. She was 94.

Mrs. Soper was born in St. Paul, Neb. to Richard Wayne and Elsie Donovan. 

She graduated from Santa Monica High School. 

She met and married Elmer Soper in 1935, they lived in Santa Monica for 60 years before moving to Murphys in 1986. 

She was a housewife while she raised her children and then went back to work as a dental assistant in Pacific Palisades. She worked in the dental field for more than 30 years.

She was president of the Parent-Teacher Association and district council in Santa Monica. She was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star for more than 50 years and spent many years on the advisory board of the Order of the Rainbow for Girls, of which both her daughters were members. 

She enjoyed ballroom dancing, crocheting, embroidery. She was a skilled seamstress and made clothes for her family, including evening gowns.

She enjoyed traveling and visited many countries throughout the world. In 2006 she visited her ancestral home in Ireland. During the trip she also went to Scotland, Norway, the Netherlands, Belgium, France and England. 

Mrs. Soper was preceded in death by her husband, Elmer, in 1991; her parents; her step-father, Ted Brown; and her granddaughters, Debra Gualdoni and Margo Maddy.

She is survived by her daughters and their spouses, Elsie and Ray Whittle, of Murphys, and Donna and Marvin Maddy, of Chula Vista; her grandchildren and their spouses, Lori Ford, Kristi and John Adams, Raymond “Buz” Whittle, Donna and Terry Bullock, Amber and Shaun Terry, Erin and Jennifer Maddy, David Maddy, Steve and Moesha Maddy and Larry Maddy; 17 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to a charity of choice. 

Services will be held at 11 a.m., Saturday, Aug. 18, at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints of Murphys, 400 Bret Harte Road. A luncheon will follow.

Richard Andrew   ‘Rick’ Franco

April 26, 1950 — July 30, 2012

Modesto resident Richard Andrew “Rick” Franco died July 30 at Memorial Medical Center in Modesto. He was 62.

Mr. Franco was born in Jamestown to Pete and Ruby Franco. 

He was a top athlete and valedictorian in the Sonora High School Class of 1968. 

He served in Vietnam with the 101st Airborne Division of the U.S. Army. 

Franco later settled in Modesto, where he was a businessman and investor for nearly 40 years. 

He enjoyed fishing, thoroughbred horse racing and supporting local sports teams. 

Mr. Franco was preceded in death by his parents.

He is survived by his fiancee, Lindi Farmer, of Modesto; two children, Jake Franco and his wife, Amy, of London, England; and Sarah Franco, of San Diego; two grandchildren, Mia Franco, of London England, and Chase Messersmith, of San Diego; his brother, Larry Franco, and his wife, Cindy, of Thousand Oaks; and one niece and two nephews.

Maxine ‘Macky’ Mapel

Aug. 11, 1924 — July 4, 2012

Tuolumne County resident Maxine “Macky” Mapel died July 4 at Country Villa Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Modesto. She was 87.

Ms. Mapel was born in Rock Island, Ill. She lived in Bay Area for 30 years but later moved around for several years. She settled in Jamestown in 2003. 

After breaking her shoulder in 2008, she lived in multiple long term care facilities in the Sonora area before moving to Modesto in May. 

Ms. Mapel had many different jobs throughout her life but enjoyed working in the arts, teaching pre-school, retail and reception. 

She was an artist and enjoyed taking classes. She practiced painting, drawing, jewelry making, copper etching, sculpture, sewing, knitting and crocheting. She enjoyed book clubs that read non-fiction books in particular. 

Ms. Mapel was preceded in death by her son, Bruce Brown, in 2004; her sister, Susan Jordan, in 1996; grandson, Devin van Eck, in April 2012; and former husband, Eugene Brown. 

She is survived by her children and their spouses, Steve and Sally Brown, of Portland, Ore., Gordon “Corky” and Charlotte Brown, of Youngstown, Ariz., and Terry and Doug Van Eck, of Newark; her sister and brother-in-law, Sally and Vernon Forsberg, of Madison, Wis., her brother-in-law, Ron Jordan, of Coal Valley, Ill.; and her grandchildren and their spouses, Janet and Raymond Kirkland, of Washington; Tammy and Patrick Galberaith, of Bainbridge Island, Wash., Ryan and Kimberly Brown, of Avondale, Ariz., and Wendy Gonzales, of Newark. 

Services will be held 4 p.m. Saturday at the Seventh-day Adventist Church in Sonora, 40 N. Forest Road. A meal will follow the service.

 Larry Koch

Jan. 17, 1941 — July 31, 2012

Larry Koch, who split his time between San Jose and his cabin in Twain Harte, died July 31 at Sonora Regional Medical Center. He was 71.

Mr. Koch was born in Bucyrus, Miss., to Kenneth and Jessie Koch. He graduated from high school in Casper, Wyo. 

He served in the U.S. Army for three years and was stationed in Germany, where he met his future wife, Inge. They wed on Aug. 24, 1962.

He worked in the chemical industry for 40 years at Platte Pipeline and Air Products in San Jose.  

He enjoyed fishing, hunting, the outdoors and working on his cabin. 

Mr. Koch was preceded in death by his son, Kenneth Keith Koch; and his parents.

He is survived by his wife of nearly 50 years, Inge Koch; his daughters and their spouses, Dina and Russ Berckart; and Wendy and Tony Bartyczak; his siblings, Karlene Anthony and Lonnie Koch; and his grandchildren, Alexandria, Kyle, Garrett, Tanner and Parker, all of the San Jose area.

No services are planned at this time.

Steven McKinley Frost

Dec. 20, 1951 – Aug. 2, 2012

Sonora resident Steven McKinley Frost died Aug. 2 at his home of a brain tumor. He was 60 years old.

Mr. Frost was born in Roseburg, Ore., and later moved to Tuolumne County where he spent most his life.

He graduated from Sonora High School and attended Stanislaus State University, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in physics with a minor in computer science.

Mr. Frost continued his education throughout much of his adult life at Columbia College, where he was also employed for 30 years. He retired in 2011.

Earlier in his life, he was a volunteer mathematics tutor at Columbia Elementary School. He later taught metal sculpture with his father, McKinley Frost, at Columbia College as an adjunct instructor.

He enjoyed the outdoors, camping and the ocean. He lived in Hawaii for a short time and his family said the small coastal town of Gualala was one of his favorite places to visit. He often spoke of the many trips he took to Baja California, Mexico, with family.

He enjoyed the arts, including photography, metal sculpture and architecture. He especially enjoyed music, primarily jazz, blues and rock and roll. He played bass guitar and keyboard and enjoyed playing with friends.

Mr. Frost  was preceded in death by his mother, Eunice Bernice “Bea” Frost.

He is survived by his wife of 17 years, Debra Frost, of Sonora; his father, McKinley “Mack” Frost, of Jamestown; his stepdaughter Dana Campbell and her husband, Robert Rasmussen, of Concord; his stepmother Joyce Frost; his sister Debbie Nies; and one niece and one nephew.  

A private service will be held at a later date.

Ronald ‘Ron’ Schoon

Aug. 15, 1941 — July 28, 2012

Sonora resident Ronald “Ron” Schoon died July 28 at sea on an Alaskan cruise ship. He was 70.

Mr. Schoon was born in Gary, Ind., but was raised in Ripon. He lived in Tuolumne County for the past 32 years. 

He worked in auto repair in the 1960s and opened Schoon’s Draperies in Ripon in 1971. He moved to Cold Springs in 1980 while building a cabin in Twain Harte that was completed in 1981. During this time, he opened R & B Draperies and Interiors with his wife, Bea. 

They moved to Sonora in 1986 and founded Meadow View Manor residential care home in 1995. The facility initially housed six residents but later grew to accommodate 20. He worked as the administrator of the family business for 17 years.

Schoon was a member of the Christian Heights Assembly of God Church and enjoyed taking cruises and traveling in recreational vehicles. 

Mr. Schoon was preceded in death by his father, Gilbert Schoon, and mother, Elsie Schoon, in 2011.

He is survived by his wife of 49 years, Bea Schoon; his children and their spouses, Cheryl and Gary Dupuich, Rob and Randee Schoon, and Kevin and Heather Schoon; and grandchildren, Curtis Schoon, Jessica Schoon, Nick Bryant, Megan Bryant, Mikayla Schoon, and Bryan Dupuich, all of Sonora.

A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at Christian Heights Assembly of God, 13711 Joshua Way, Sonora.

William Paul ‘Bill’ Votaw

May 25, 1927 — Aug. 2, 2012

Arnold resident William Paul “Bill” Votaw died Aug. 2 at home. He was 85.

Mr. Votaw was born in San Francisco to Ernie and Lydia (Carpenter) Votaw. He was a fourth generation San Francisco native.

He graduated from Bellarmine College Preparatory in San Jose and the University of California, Berkeley, with a bachelor’s degree in business administration. He was a member of the Kappa Alpha fraternity. 

In 1961, he married Martha Reeves, in Tulsa, Okla. They settled in Marin County and retired to Arnold in 1995.

His first job was with the Arrow Shirt Co. He later joined the family business, Pebble Beach Sportswear. He continued with various companies as a sales representative until his retirement from North American Philips in 1995.

Mr. Votaw enjoyed sailing and was a member of the San Francisco Yacht Club. He won the season championship on his boat the Ah-Wahine, a Rhodes 33 sailboat, in 1962. 

He served for two years as a Scoutmaster with the Boys Scouts of America. After moving to Arnold, he served as “Big Sir” of the Sons in Retirement, governor of the Loyal Order of the Moose, president of Our Lady of the Sierra Men’s Club and was a member of the International Association of Lions. He was a member of Our Lady of the Sierra Catholic Church in Arnold. 

Mr. Votaw was preceded in death by his parents; his sister, Margaret Votaw Haran, and her husband, Greg.

He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Martha Votaw, of Arnold; his daughter, Kelly Votaw Pokojski and her husband, William; his son Jeffrey Paul Votaw and his wife, Tamara; sisters, Suzi Votaw and Nancy Manasco, of San Jose; and grandchildren, William Pokojski,  Kristen Votaw and Walker Votaw.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Guide Dogs for the Blind in San Rafael.

Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Murphys.

Robert Gill Jr.

Sept. 14, 1924 — Aug. 5, 2012

Murphys resident Robert Gill Jr. died Saturday at his home. He was 87.

Mr. Gill was born in Palms to Elsie (Chalmers) and Robert Gill Sr., both originally of Aberdeen, Scotland.

He was raised in Palms and Venice in Los Angeles County.

Her served as a communications chief in the U.S. Army in Central Europe during World War II. After he was honorably discharged in 1946, he worked as a service mechanic for the Southern California Gas Company for 35 years, before retiring to Murphys.

He enjoyed fixing things and in his retirement, enjoyed working on cars, radios and televisions. He enjoyed animals and in his later years would often sit in his garage with his cat in his lap watching neighbors go by. 

Mr. Gill was preceded in death by his parents; and his three sisters, Elsie, Blanche, and Catherine.

He is survived by his wife of 47 years, Waldtraut “Wally” Gill, of Murphys; daughters, Anneliese Gill and her husband, Brock Kolby, of Murphys and Katherine Gill, of Palo Alto; and his grandson, Jimmy Kolby, of Murphys.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Calaveras Humane Society or Hospice of the Sierra. 

Services will be held at 10 a.m. Friday at Angels Memorial Chapel, 1071 S. Main Street, Angels Camp. Followed by an internment at Buena Vista Cemetery in Murphys, A reception will follow at the Gill residence on Rocky Hill Road.
