Patricia Jane  (Hennessy) Frey

March 16, 1927 — Nov. 9, 2013 

Twain Harte Patricia Jane (Hennessy) Frey died Nov. 9 at Meadow View Manor in East Sonora. She was 86. 

Mrs. Frey was born in San Francisco, the daughter of Stephen and Marian Hennessy. 

She graduated from Sequoia High School and attended College of San Mateo for a time, which is where she met her future husband, John “Jack” Frey.

They married in San Mateo in 1947 and lived in Burlingame for a number of years before settling in Oakdale.

She and her husband vacationed in Tuolumne County for a number of years before building a house in the Confidence area in the late 1980s.

Mrs. Frey was a fine art painter and taught art lessons in topics ranging from pastels to basket weaving for many years. She also enjoyed painting, woodworking, knitting, quilting, cooking, traveling and spending time with her friends and family.

Mrs. Frey was preceded in death by her granddaughter, Erin Laughlin, in 2003.

She is survived by her husband Jack Frey, of Twain Harte; her daughters, Sheryl Parola, of Sonora, Leslie Laughlin, of Merced, Karen Frey, of Oakland, and Melinda Frey, of Damascus, Ore., six grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

A celebration of life will be held in the spring.

Neptune Society of Central California is handling arrangements. 

Debra Lynn Gilchrist

March 23, 1960 — Dec. 15, 2013 

Campo Seco resident Debra Lynn Gilchrist died suddenly on Dec. 15 at Mark Twain Medical Center in San Andreas. She was 53.

Mrs. Gilchrist was born in Spokane, Wash., the daughter of John and Betty Grundy.

She graduated from Portsmouth High School in New Hampshire. Her family settled in Jackson in 1997.

She worked as a chef for a number of years at the National Hotel in Jackson and the La Contenta Golf and Country Club in Valley Springs. She was a homemaker in her more recent years.

She married Mark Gilchrist on Dec. 22 at a church in West Point. 

She enjoyed reading, writing, latch hook rugs and crafts as well as spending time with family and friends.

Mrs. Gilchrist was preceded in death by her parents. 

She is survived by her husband, Mark Gilchrist, of Campo Seco; her children, Cheri, of Rancho Cordova, Corey, of Fair Oaks, and Cassandra, of Rancho Cordova; her siblings, Susan and Greg, both of Gridley, in Butte County; seven grandchildren; and 15 nieces and nephews.

Services have been held.

Jennifer R. Hatten

Aug. 26, 1954 — Nov. 28, 2013

Mokelumne Hill resident Jennifer R. Hatten died Nov. 28 at her home. She was 59.

Mrs. Hatten was born in Alameda, the daughter of Raynold Riel and Jean (Elder) Riel. 

She attended Acalanes and Castro Valley high schools and graduated top of her class. She earned bachelor’s degrees in art history, sociology and recreation from California State University, Hayward, and the University of Toronto.

She married James Hatten in Lake Tahoe in 1982. 

She left a career at MGM Studios to become a fulltime wife and mother.

During her children’s formative years, she acted as a “class mother” and Brownie troop leader.

She was a former historian at the Mokelumne Hill Library and Bible study leader.

She was a member of the Sutter Creek Church of the Nazarene.

Mrs. Hatten was an artist and practiced many mediums. She also enjoyed gardening, reading, cooking and crafting.

She was also a member of Mensa.

Mrs. Hatten was preceded in death by father, Ray Riel; sister, Stephanie Riel; and stepdaughter, Teresa Hatten.

She is survived by her husband of 32 years, James Hatten, of Mokelumne Hill; daughters and their spouses, Jamie and Kevin Keil, of Esparto, and Jessica and Caleb Ribeiro, of Kansas City, Kan.; granddaughter, Olivia Grace Keil, of Esparto; mother, Jean Riel, of Paradise; brother, Randy Riel; and sisters, Karen Oliver and her husband, Dan, of Antioch.

A memorial service officiated by Pastor Mark Lehman will be held at 2 p.m. Jan. 11 at Sutter Creek Church of the Nazarene, 14040 Ridge Road, Sutter Creek. A reception will follow at the church.

In lieu of flowers, donations in her memory can be made to the American Diabetes Association, P.O. Box 1131, Fairfax, VA 22038-1131.

Elaine J. Jorn

June 2, 1923 — Dec. 15, 2013

Lifelong Angels Camp resident Elaine J. Jorn died Dec. 15 at her home. She was 90.

Ms. Jorn was born in Angels Camp, the daughter of William and Dorothy Miladinovich. 

She worked as a corporate secretary for 41 years with the Calaveras Cement Plant in San Andreas, until its closing in 1983. She also worked as a front desk receptionist at the Black Bart Inn in San Andreas, until her retirement.

She is preceded in death by her parents, William and Dorothy Miladinovich, of Angels Camp; and her sisters, Joanne Anderson, and Doris Egan Cassidy. 

Ms. Jorn is survived by her brother, William Miladinovich, of Angels Camp; and several generations of nieces and nephews. 

Ms. Jorn was an avid supporter of the Humane Society and animal causes. In lieu of flowers, donations in her memory can be made to the Calaveras Humane Society,  P.O. Box 2065, San Andreas, CA 95249.

No services will be held at her request.
