Roy Owen Sergent
April 5, 1936 — Oct. 17, 2012
Longtime Sonora resident Roy Owen Sergent died Oct. 17 at his home. He was 76.
Mr. Sergent was born in San Pedro to Owen and Mary Sergent. He graduated from Banning High School in Wilmington, where he met his future wife, Nancy Wells.
Mr. Sergent became a sheet metal journeyman at the Long Beach Naval Shipyard, then joined the Long Beach Police Department.
He later worked in the California Highway Patrol and was stationed in South Los Angeles.
He transferred to the East Los Angeles station to be a motorcycle officer and transferred to the Jamestown CHP office in 1969.
After his retirement, he became a real estate broker in Sonora and then later worked as a bailiff in the Tuolumne County Superior Court.
Mr. Sergent enjoyed traveling, golfing and reading.
He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Nancy Sergent, of Sonora; his daughter and son-in-law, Laurie and Donald Luna, of Stockton; his son and daughter-in-law, Larry and Robin Sergent of Sonora; grandchildren, Ryan and his wife, Erica Peters, of San Francisco, Danielle and her husband Jamie Kuperman, of Austin, Texas, Corey and his wife, Casey Peters, of Mariposa, Krysta, Jordan, Jason and Kayla Sergent, of Sonora, and James Klyn, of Sonora; and five great-grandchildren.
In lieu of flowers, a donation in his name may be made to Hospice of the Sierra, 20100 Cedar Road North, Sonora, CA 95370, or to a favorite charity.
Visitation will be held from 1 to 4 p.m. Saturday at Terzich and Wilson Funeral Home.

Frank John Gagliardi
Oct. 2, 1942 — Oct. 13, 2012
Former Sonora resident Frank John “Francuzzo” Gagliardi died Oct. 13 at his home in Las Vegas. He was 70.
Mr. Gagliardi was born in Cosenza, Calabria, Italy, and moved to the United States in 1954.
He lived in San Bruno and attended Junipero Serra High School and graduated from Capuchino High School. He attended San Mateo Junior College.
He served six years in the U.S. Marine Corps and was honorably discharged as a gunnery sergeant. He retired from Pacific Gas and Electric as a safety operations supervisor and then opened Frankie G’s Italian Family Restaurant in Danville.
Mr. Gagliardi moved to Sonora in the 1990s and opened Gagliardi’s at La Torre. He then went into construction in 1998. He moved to Las Vegas and opened “Home Solutions.”
He enjoyed sports and was a fan of University of Southern California football, San Francisco Giants and Pittsburgh Steelers. He also enjoyed cooking. He was active in the Danville Little League and served as president.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Nicola and Rose Gagliardi.
He is survived by his wife, Patti “Patrizzia” Gagliardi, of Las Vegas; sons David Gagliardi, of Colorado, Christopher Gagliardi, of North Carolina, and Justin Gagliardi, of Las Vegas; his brother, Carmen Gagliardi, of San Mateo; and granddaughters, Tessa, Samantha, Ava “Tootsie” and Sophia “Tootsie Two,” Gagliardi.

Theodore ‘Ted’ Effken
Nov. 9, 1930 — Oct. 9, 2012
Angels Camp resident Theodore “Ted” Effken died Oct. 9 at Mark Twain Convalescent Hospital. He was 81.
Mr. Effken was born near Cook, Neb., and attended Nebraska State College. He served in the U.S. Air Force from 1952 to 1955.
Upon leaving the Air Force, he became an air traffic controller and computer programmer for the Federal Aviation Administration. He earned a degree from University of New Mexico while working. He retired after 30 years in 1985. He then worked for 16 years for Hughes Raytheon as an air traffic automation designer-programmer. He completely retired in 2001.
Through the years, Mr. Effken lived in England, New Mexico, Hawaii, Annapolis, Md., Albuquerque, N.M., and Fremont. He lived in Angels Camp for 11 years.
He enjoyed international travel with his jobs. He loved taking road trips with his grandchildren. He liked to read and also enjoyed watching sports. He was an active member of Alcoholics Anonymous.
He is survived by ex-wives, Madeleine Smith, of Belmont, and Geraldine Effken, of San Leandro; his brother, John and his wife, Evelyn Effken, of Cook, Neb.; children Christina Effken, of Murphys; his son Paul and his wife Karen Effken, of Fremont; and four grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his brother, Bill Effken.
Services will be held at 11 a.m. Oct. 27 at Angels Memorial Chapel in Angels Camp. A lunch reception will follow at 12:30 p.m. at Greenhorn Creek’s Fireside Room, 676 McCauley Ranch Road, Angels Camp.

Alice Jacqueline (Pinnick) Kosty

Mountain Ranch resident Alice Jacqueline Kosty died Monday at her home. She was 48.
Mrs. Kosty was born in Fontana to Walter Pinnick and Judith (Remsen) Pinnick.
She worked as the personnel manager for Bear Valley Mountain Resort.
She was a member of the Episcopal church and enjoyed creative design, gardening and animals.
Mrs. Kosty was preceded in death by her husband, Michael Kosty.
She is survived by her mother and stepfather, Judith and Douglas Worley, of Mountain Ranch; her brother, Michael Pinnick and his wife, and Patty, of Stockton; her sister, Heather Pinnick, of Santa Barbara; and her sister-in-law, Evie Surls, of San Andreas.

Curtis Ray Lohr
June 28, 1933 — Oct. 12, 2012
Sonora resident Curtis Ray Lohr died Friday at Avalon Care Center of Sonora from complications of Alzheimer’s disease. He was 79.
Mr. Lohr was born in Minneapolis, Minn., the youngest of three boys. His family moved to Sun Valley, near Los Angeles, in 1949. He graduated from North Hollywood High School in 1952.
He spent several years drag racing and working in machine shops in Burbank before going to work for Onmark Engineering in Van Nuys.
He married Evelyn Engelhardt in 1967.
They began a 45-year career as antique dealers after moving to Cayucos in San Luis Obispo. They moved to Sonora in 1976 to provide a rural life for their daughters.
Mr. Lohr enjoyed furniture restoration, old cars, collecting antiques and vintage toys, yard sales, bowling, golfing, walking, volunteering with 4-H and his children’s youth activities and arguing about politics.
He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers.
Mr. Lohr is survived by his wife of 45 years, Evelyn Lohr, of Sonora; his daughters, Jonni Mayberry and her husband, Michael, of Fortuna, and Patti Lohr-Stevenson and her husband, Kenneth, of Eureka; three grandsons; two granddaughters; his mother-in-law, Doris Ryan; and several nieces and nephews.

Nancy C. Gullion
Oct. 14, 1926 — Oct. 11, 2012
Sonora resident Nancy C. Gullion died Thursday at Avalon Care Center of Sonora. She was 85.
Mrs. Gullion was born in Indianapolis, Ind.
She and her husband, Jim Gullion, raised their family in Santa Clara County before retiring to Sonora in 1990.
She worked at Lockheed Martin for 25 years before retirement.
Mrs. Gullion taught herself to play piano at age 4. She never had lessons or learned to read music but she had the ability to learn songs upon hearing them. She memorized thousands of songs throughout her life, her family said.
She also played the violin, xylophone and organ.
While living in the Bay Area she also entertained professionally, playing piano at restaurants and nightclubs. She most enjoyed playing songs from the 1940s and ’50s.
In her retirement, she volunteered her time and talent by playing at the Tuolumne General Hospital Long Term Care, Adult Day Care and Avalon Care Center.
She also enjoyed animals and gardening.
She was a member of Jamestown Methodist Church for many years, she enjoyed playing the organ at church on Sundays.
Mrs. Gullion was preceded in death by her husband, Jim, in February of this year.
She is survived by her three daughters; three grandchildren; two stepgrandchildren; and several great-grandchildren.

Marian Patricia ‘Pat’ Parker

Former Lake Tulloch resident Marian Patricia “Pat” Parker died Sunday in Bend, Ore. She was 84.
Mrs. Parker was born in Bend to Clarence and Grace (Ralston) Bagley. Soon after, her family moved to Eureka, where she graduated from Eureka High School in 1945.
She studied art at California State University, Humboldt.
She married John E. Parker on Sept. 29, 1946, in Carson City, Nev.
Mrs. Parker worked as a registrar at North Salinas High School, in Salinas, for six years. Later she and her husband ran a successful boat store in Los Altos.
The couple retired to Lake Tulloch and lived there for a number of years.
She enjoyed boating, water skiing, playing the piano, gardening and reading. She was also an artist and enjoyed drawing, sewing and crafts.
Mrs. Parker was preceded in death by her parents; her daughters, Chris Darmody and Janice Jackson; and her grandson, Patrick Darmody.
She is survived by her husband of 66 years, John E. Parker of Bend; her children and their spouses, James E. and Cynthia Parker, of Santa Rosa, Cindy L. and DeWayne Petri, of Bend; her three grandchildren, Todd Darmody, Brett Parker and Lindsay Parker; two great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held Oct. 27.

John Richard Arndt
March 1, 1938 — Oct. 6, 2012
Sonora resident John Richard Arndt died Oct. 6 at his home after an eight-month battle with leukemia. He was 74.
Mr. Arndt was born in Sacramento to John and Laura Maxene Arndt.
Soon after, his family moved to Portland, Ore., where he grew up. He graduated from Grant High School in 1955 and Wheaton College in Wheaton, Ill., with a bachelor of science degree in geology in 1959.
He served in the U.S. Army from 1961 to 1963 during the Berlin Crisis.
Afterwards, he attended Oregon State University and graduated in 1965 with a master of education in guidance and a master of science in general science.
He earned a doctorate in administration and higher education from Michigan State University in 1970.
During high school and college he enjoyed cross-country and track as a middle distance runner.
Mr. Arndt worked in higher education for many years. He was director emeritus of advising and testing services at California State University, Fresno, until retiring in 2000. He then served as a part-time adviser at Fresno City College for six years.
He moved to Sonora in 2006 when he married Dorothy Hill Woodford.
A lifelong Christian, he was involved with several churches and InterVarsity Christian Fellowship where he taught Bible studies. He was a member of Sierra Bible Church in Sonora, where he served in men’s ministries and home Bible studies. He was a religious volunteer at Sierra Conservation Center.
Mr. Arndt also volunteered as a court appointed special advocate for children in foster care and was involved in a reading and tutoring program for underprivileged children and with Interfaith Community Social Services.
He enjoyed traveling, reading and studying scripture.
Mr. Arndt is survived by his wife of six years, Dorothy Hill Woodford Arndt, of Sonora; his children, Scott Arndt, of Fresno, Heidi Vandemark and her husband, Lorne, of Modesto; his grandchildren, Tyler and Kenna Vandemark, of Modesto; his sister, Cathy Congdon, of Killingworth, Conn.; his former wife, Jan Arndt, of Fresno; and several nieces and nephews.

Sonora resident Sue Ann Rivera died Oct. 6 at her home. She was 78.
Mrs. Rivera was born in San Jose to George H. Stanley and Zelda May (Meeker) Stanley.
She retired from San Jose to Sonora more than 20 years ago.
She trained at Bryman College in San Jose in 1974 and worked as a medical assistant for many years. She was appointed to the Tuolumne County In-Home Supportive Services Advisory Committee for 10 years.
She retired because of disabilities.
She enjoyed yard sales, antiquing and playing bingo.
Mrs. Rivera was preceded in death by her husband of 22 years, Marcos Rivera in 1992; her father, George H. Stanley, in 1974; and her mother, Zelda May (Meeker) Stanley, in 1952.
She is survived by her five children, Tim Gairaud, of Boulder Creek, Lori Webb and her husband, J.J., of Boulder Creek, Patti Gairaud, of San Jose, Geri Swanson, of Pajaro Dunes, and Suzanne Gairaud, of Sunnyvale; her grandchildren, Larissa Ramirez and her husband, Chris, of Ben Lomond, Jason Webb, of San Francisco, Erin Webb, of Amherst, Mass., Tony King and his wife, Alicia, of Thousand Oaks, Gina King, of Sacramento, Teddy Thomas, Jasmine Gairaud and Ruby Gairaud, all of San Jose, Ryan Swanson, of Monte Sereno, Sara Swanson, of Campbell, Kasey Collins, of Sunnyvale, and T.J. Keith Edward Winter

Angels Camp resident Keith Edward Winter died Oct. 5 of lung disease at his home. He was 62.
Mr. Winter was born in San Diego, the middle of five children. He was raised in El Cajon.
He graduated from DeVry University in Phoenix at 22. After, he moved to the Bay Area, where he began a 40-year career in computer electronics that included two years with Intel Corporation.
He and his wife settled in Arnold in 2002. They came to the area because they had enjoyed camping at Calaveras Big Trees State Park, family said.
Mr. Winter operated a weather website for Arnold from his home in Blue Lake Springs from 2004 to 2008. In 2008, they moved to Angels Camp and he set up a similar weather website there. He was also active in the online Southwestern Weather Network, including their web display and forum.
He enjoyed riding sport bike motorcycles over Ebbetts, Monitor and Sonora passes, computers, and watching and quoting old movies.
Mr. Winter is survived by his wife of 26 years, Shera Winter, of Angels Camp; his daughters, Jeannette Price, of Folsom, and Christina Supangan, of Denver, Colo.; and his grandchildren, Alexis Supangan and Andrew Supangan, of Denver, and Justin Price, of Folsom.
A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Oct. 20 at Foothill Community Church, 3710 Whittle Road, Angels Camp.
An outdoor reception will follow the service.

Leila Maude (Gilbert) Crook

Sonora resident Leila Maude (Gilbert) Crook died Oct. 7 at Sonora Regional Medical Center. She was 95.
Mrs. Crook was born in Boise, Idaho. Her family moved to Alameda when she was a young girl and she lived there for a number years before settling in Tuolumne County more than 66 years ago.
She was a homemaker and enjoyed traveling, camping, gardening and working in the yard.
She was a member of Sierra Bible Church and also taught Sunday school at Sonora Methodist Church for several years during the 1950s.
Mrs. Crook was preceded in death by her husband, Charles Crook, in 2001.
She is survived by her son, Donald Crook and his wife, Sharon, of Sonora; her siblings, Bob Gilbert, of San Leandro, and Esther Bowen and Ruth Maxey, of Alameda; and her grandsons, Rick and Mike Crook, of Sonora; and four great-grandchildren.

Joan Louise (Allen) Hoffman

Former Tuolumne County resident Joan Louise (Allen) Hoffman died Tuesday at Emeritus Senior Living in Elk Grove. She was 74.
Mrs. Hoffman was born in Sonora and grew up in Chinese Camp. She graduated from Sonora High School in 1956.
After high school, she moved to Sacramento where she began a long career working for the state.
She served with several state agencies before retiring from the Department of Social Services in 2004.
She enjoyed fine cooking and going to restaurants.
She is survived by her children, Eric Hoffman, of Alaska, Jeff Hoffman, of San Francisco, and Toni Quinn, of Thousand Oaks; grandchildren, John Hoffman, of Alaska, Riley Quinn, of Thousand Oaks, Tyler Hoffman and Nicole Moma, of Alaska; and two sisters, Wanda Albertson and June Peterson, of Chinese Camp; and a former husband.

Robin Russell Disbrow
Aug. 8, 1924 — Sept. 29, 2012
Groveland resident Robin Russell Disbrow died Sept. 29 at Sonora Regional Medical Center. He was 88.
Mr. Disbrow was born in Ronan, Mont.
He was drafted in 1943 and served with the Army Air Forces 98th Bomb Squadron based in Lecce, Italy during World War II. He flew more than 50 missions as a flight engineer on B-24 Liberator planes.
He worked at a truck driver for Pacific Motor Trucking in Modesto for more than 40 years. He retired to Groveland 25 years ago.
Mr. Disbrow enjoyed hunting, fishing, horses, camping and square dancing. He was also a storyteller, said his family.
Mr. Disbrow was preceded in death by his first wife, Melvina Disbrow, in 1979.
He is survived by his wife of 29 years, Roberta Disbrow, of Modesto; his children and their spouses, Kathleen and Dennis Bauman, of Spokane, Wash., Diana and Brent Riggs, of Ogden, Utah, and Robin Atkin, of Fresno; his step-children and their spouses, Tamara Meadows, of Modesto, David and Nicole Meadows, of Eureka, and Brenda and Nick Mercier, of Austin, Texas; 14 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

Bonnie Harris

Tuolumne resident Bonnie Harris died Monday at Oak Terrace Memory Care in Soulsbyville. She was 91.
Mrs. Harris was born in Oakland. She settled in Tuolumne County with her family 55 years ago.
She worked as a healthcare professional for 60 years until retirement. She worked as a registered nurse for a number of years. After moving to the county, she worked as a utilization review nurse for Sonora Community and Tuolumne General hospitals.
She enjoyed reading, gardening and traveling.
Mrs. Harris was preceded in death by her husband of 69 years, Walter Harris, in August.
She is survived by her children, Barbara Harris, of Sonora, Walter Harris Jr., of Pittsburgh, Penn., and Kathy Chase, of Sonora; and three grandchildren.

Eva F. Hensley
April 25, 1926 — Oct. 9, 2012
San Andreas resident Eva F. Hensley died Tuesday at her home. She was 86.
Mrs. Hensley was born in Kennedy Flat, now part of Jackson.
Her family moved to Calaveras County while she an infant.
She graduated from Calaveras High School in the early 1940s.
She worked at Kelly’s Drug Store in San Andreas after graduating from high school. She later owned and operated the Wilseyville General Store in San Andreas from 1947 to the early 1960s. She also helped her husband, Joe Hensley, run his refrigeration business in San Andreas until their retirement in 1989.
After their retirement, the Hensleys lived in Maui, Hawaii for 13 years before returning to Calaveras County in 2002 after the births of their great-grandchildren.
She was a former member of St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church in Mokelumne Hill.
Mrs. Hensley was preceded in death by her husband, Joe Hensley, in 2010; and her grandson, Jason Morrill, in February.
She is survived by her daughter, Sandy Morrill, of Mokelumne Hill; her grandson, Joseph Morrill, of Martinez; and her granddaughter, Jenessa Morrill, of Mokelumne Hill.
Private family services will be held at a later date.

George Alves
May 14, 1918 — Oct. 5, 2012
Sonora resident George Alves died Friday at Oak Terrace Memory Care in Soulsbyville. He was 94.
Mr. Alves was born in Manteca. During World War II he served on destroyers in the Mediterranean, Atlantic and Pacific oceans.
He worked as a Teamster before and after World War II in Stockton until 1960. He then settled in the Linden and the Oakdale areas, where he lived and worked as a dairyman, cattle rancher and farmer for more than 40 years.
He moved to Sonora six years ago to be closer to family.
Mr. Alves was a member of the American Legion Smyth-Bolter Post No. 58 of Sonora. He enjoyed cooking, baking and gardening, particularly roses and vegetables.
Mr. Alves was preceded in death by his wife Lorraine Alves, in 2006; and six siblings.
He is survived by his sons, Bruce Alves, of Twain Harte, Keith Alves, of Fresno, and Mark Alves; his sister, Beatrice Kantack, of Manteca; four grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
Viewing will be held from 10 a.m. Friday at Cherokee Memorial Park Chapel on Highway 99 at Harney Lane in Lodi. Graveside services will follow at 11:30 a.m.

Gary Dean Faria

Sonora resident Gary Dean Faria died Monday at the Alexander Cohen Hospice House in Hughson of brain cancer. He was 53.
Mr. Faria was born in San Jose to Nellie and Lester Faria. He was the youngest of four boys.
He grew up in Turlock, where his first business venture as a young boy was making and selling peace signs.
He continued as an entrepreneur and owned a traveling motorcycle accessory business for the 12 years with his wife, Karen. The business allowed them to travel often and they enjoyed winters in Quartzite, Ariz.
The couple settled in Sonora 20 years ago.
Mr. Faria also enjoyed elk hunting in Idaho, deep sea fishing off the coast of Mexico, riding his Harley-Davidson motorcycle, playing bingo, gardening, cooking, canning olives and creating new recipes.
He was a member of Matuca Chapter 58 of E Clampus Vitus.
Mr. Faria was preceded in death by his father, Lester Faria, in 2003; and his brothers, David Faria, in 1995, and Kenny Faria, in 1990.
He is survived by his wife of 27 years, Karen Faria, of Sonora; his mother, Nellie Faria, of Waldron, Ark.; his brother, Steven Faria, of Waldron, Ark.; and several generations of nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. Friday with a memorial following at 11 a.m. Saturday. Both will be held at Terzich and Wilson Funeral Home, which is also handling arrangements.
A celebration of the life and potluck will be at the Red Barn on Highway 49 in Tuttletown after the memorial service.
Phoebe Elizabeth ‘Bobbi’ Martin
February 9, 1938 — Oct. 7, 2012
Sonora resident Phoebe Elizabeth “Bobbi” Martin died Oct. 7 at her home of cancer. She was 74.
Mrs. Martin was born in Fountain, Colo. She settled in Sonora 27 years ago.
She worked as an admittance clerk at Tuolumne General Hospital for 18 years until its closure. She enjoyed gardening and interior decorating.
Mrs. Martin was preceded in death by her mother, Mary Veronica Martin, in 2000, and her father, Augustine Martin, in the 1950s.
She is survived by her children and their spouses, Penny Emig Gamble, of Twain Harte, Dawn and Brad Oranhood, of Sacramento, and Hope and Matthew Bouchard, of Sonora; grandchildren, Jackson and Colby Bouchard, of Sonora; and six siblings, Estelle Moses, of Georgia, Gloria Libor, of Colorado, Pat Quatlebaum, of Georgia, Betty Archuleta, of Colorado, Marlene Sanchez, of Colorado, and Becky Taylor, of Elk Grove.

Robert F. Mitchell
Nov. 11, 1922 — Oct. 2, 2012
Sonora resident Robert F. Mitchell died Monday at Sonora Regional Medical Center. He was 89.
Mr. Mitchell was born in Ogden, Utah.
He worked as a procurement officer for the California Department of Corrections for more than 30 years before retiring in the mid-1970s.
Mr. Mitchell and his family moved throughout the state because of his work but the family settled in Sonora in 1965 with the opening of the Sierra Conservation Center.
He was a member of the California State Employees Association, Concord Masonic Lodge 117 and was a member of the Free and Accepted Masons since 1956.
He enjoyed the outdoors and traveling.
Mr. Mitchell was preceded in death by his wife of more than 50 years, Patricia Ann Mitchell, in 1996.
He is survived by his children, Robert E. Mitchell, of Bend, Ore., James M. Mitchell, of Lewiston, Idaho; and Pattie J. Francis, of Sonora; four grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
A family graveside will be held at Eastlawn Memorial Park in Sacramento, where arrangements are being handled.

Judith Jean Freitas
Jan. 31, 1942 — Aug. 24, 2012
Sonora resident Judith Jean Freitas died Aug. 24 at Good Samaritan Hospital in San Jose. She was 70.
Mrs. Freitas was born in St. Paul, Minn. Her family moved to Oakland when she was a young girl.
In the early 1950s, she and her mother moved from Oakland to Tuolumne, where they lived in logging camps at Westside Lumber Mill.
She graduated from high school in Tuolumne in 1959.
Mrs. Freitas moved to the Bay Area to work for Pacific Bell before returning to Sonora in 1964 to marry Louis A. Freitas.
She later worked a clerk in the Welfare Department and as an admitting clerk at Tuolumne General Hospital.
Mrs. Freitas was preceded in death by her mother, in 1984.
She is survived by her husband of 47 years, Louis A. Freitas, of Sonora; her children, Teresa Muller, Steven Freitas and Anthony Freitas; and two grandchildren, Indika and Indar Freitas.

Antonio ‘Tony’ Madrid Martin

Sonora resident Antonio “Tony” Madrid Martin died Oct. 6 at the home he shared with his daughter and her family. He was 89.
Mr. Martin was born in San Francisco to Frank and Amalia Martin.
He grew up in Winters, Yolo County, and lived there for many years before settling in Sonora a few months ago.
He served in the U.S. Army in Europe during World War II and fought in the Battle of the Bulge.
He worked as a farmer, rancher and served on the city council and as mayor in Winters. He also lived in Fairfield and Vacaville and worked for Valley View Packing Co. in the Suisun Valley as a fruit buyer and plant manager.
He enjoyed the works of Jane Austen and enjoyed storytelling.
Mr. Martin was preceded in death by his wife of 53 years, Angie Martin; his daughter, Esther Stone; parents, Frank and Amalia Martin; his brother, Joe Martin; and his sister, Madeline Jimenez.
He is survived by his daughter, Angelina Vasquez and her husband, Juan, of Sonora; his son-in-law, Andy Stone, of Sacramento; his grandchildren, A.J. Stone, of Sacramento, Sara Stone, of Sacramento, Ashley Long, of San Luis Obispo, and Rachel Long, of Sonora; his brother and sister-in-law, Frank and Ramona Martin, of Winters; and sister-in-law, Anna Martin, of Woodland; and two great-grandchildren.

Kenneth L. ‘Kenny’ Napier
April 17, 1932 — Sept. 28, 2012
Groveland resident Kenneth L. “Kenny” Napier died Sept. 28 at Avalon Care Center of Sonora. He was 80.
Mr. Napier was born in Bakersfield. He lived in the San Jose-Los Gatos area for more than 40 years before he and his wife, Valerie, settled in Groveland eight years ago.
He graduated from Bakersfield High School and Bakersfield Junior College. He went to San Jose State University on a track scholarship and earned a bachelor’s degree in 1961.
He worked as a facilities manager at the Lockheed Missiles and Space Division in Sunnyvale for 35 years until retirement.
He served in the U.S. Navy aboard the USS Bremerton from 1951 to 1953 during the Korean War. He transferred to Great Lakes, Ill., in 1953 to attend dental technician school. He was honorably discharged from the Navy in 1955 and returned to Bakersfield.
Mr. Napier was an accomplished runner, competing in high school and college. He won the Southern California and Metro Cross Country Championship as a member of the Bakersfield College Cross Country Team in 1956 and received the “most inspirational” award from the team that same year.
He was inducted into the Bakersfield Junior College Hall of Fame for track and field and cross country. He placed third at the Pacific AAU Meet in Stockton on June 1, 1957, where Don Bowden became the first American to break the four-minute mile.
In 1972, at age 40, he won the San Francisco Examiner Master’s Mile at the Cow Palace with a time of 4:37.
He was a member of the West Valley Track Club in the late 1960s and early 1970s and was a member of the West Valley Joggers and Striders for a number of years.
Mr. Napier continued to run well into his 70s.
He also enjoyed the outdoors and fly fishing and was a member of the Merced Fly Casters Club and the Mother Lode Fly Casting Club in Sonora.
Mr. Napier was preceded in death by his mother and stepfather, Lela and Carl “Pop” Davis; his father and stepmother, Rex and Teresa Napier; and his brothers, Don and Gary Napier.
He is survived by his wife of 59 years Valerie Napier, of Groveland; his daughters, Diane Dell’Armo and her husband, Taum, of Carmel, and Colleen Reece, of Groveland; his grandchildren, Valerie Taormina, of Oakland, John Dell’Armo and his fiancee, Rosie Hansen, of Santa Maria, and Taum “Joe” Dell’Armo and his wife, Samantha, of Denver; his sisters-in law, Pat Napier and Gail Pedersen, both of Bakersfield; half-siblings, Darlene Corson and Glen Napier, both of Chesapeake, Va.; and three nieces and two nephews.

Rosalie Haines Pedri
April 17, 1925 — Sept. 19, 2012
Former Tuolumne County resident Rosalie Haines Pedri died Sept. 19 at Kaiser Foundation Hospital in Modesto. She was 87.
Mrs. Pedri was born in Jerome, Ariz., but her family moved to Los Angeles in the 1930s after her father died while in the military.
During World War II, she joined the war effort and worked for the U.S. Navy making submersible pumps.
After the war, she married John Pedri, who worked as the Tuolumne County surveyor for 21 years, and the couple settled in the area from 1959 to 1998, living in Sonora, Soulsbyville and Columbia.
She lived with her son, Jim Pedri, in Redding for a few years before moving to Modesto eight years ago.
She was a homemaker for many years, but also worked at the Village Boutique in Twain Harte and later went on to work at the Princess Shoppe in downtown Sonora.
Mrs. Pedri was was a member of several churches in the area including Chapel of the Pines, Evangelical Free Church, Peaceful Valley Church and Sierra Bible Church.
She started the “Open Door” youth group in the 1970s and served as a mentor for many years.
She was also a member of the Soulsbyville Elementary School PTA during the 1960s and the Sonora High School PTA in the 1970s.
In her later years, Mrs. Pedri enjoyed photography, sketching, painting and travel. She traveled throughout the United States and most of Europe, including a trip to Northern Italy and Spain to visit family.
Mrs. Pedri was preceded in death by her husband, John Pedri, in 1992; her son, Jeff Pedri, in 2008; her sister, Tillie Rudometkin, in 2009; her brother, Eddie Haines, in 1988; and her parents.
She is survived by her children, Jim Pedri, of Redding, John Pedri, of Lincoln, Janet Alexander, of Lorton, Va., and Joe Pedri, of Fresno; her brother, Carl Haines, of Los Angeles; brother-in-law, Fred Rudometkin, of San Juan Capistrano; nine grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Theodore ‘Ted’ Wright Jr.

Sonora resident Theodore “Ted” Wright Jr. died Sept. 30 at his home after a long battle with cancer. He was 76.
Mr. Wright was born in Los Angeles but moved to Tuolumne County 50 years ago to work as a self-employed logger, which he did for 50 years until his retirement.
He enjoyed camping and the outdoors, especially Sonora Pass. He also enjoyed computers, and often took in stray cats.
Mr. Wright is survived by his wife, Linda Wright; his brother, Mark Wright; his sister, Dollie Mae Wright; and his cousin Clarene Wright, all of Sonora; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
