Robert Edwin Stokes

Jan. 14, 1927 — Sept. 5, 2003

Longtime Tuolumne County resident Robert Edwin Stokes died Friday at his home in Jamestown. He was 76.

He was born in Springfield, Ohio, and had lived in Tuolumne County since 1964.

He was a World War II Navy veteran and graduated from Michigan State University with a degree in forestry.

He worked as a forester for the U.S. Forest Service for 31 years on Ochoco, Deschutes, Modoc, Lassen and Stanislaus national forests. While working as a staff officer for the Stanislaus National Forest, his duties included range, wildlife and fire work.

His family said he was a wood carver and especially enjoyed carving ducks, birds and Santa Clauses. He was a golfer at Sierra Pines Golf Course and an avid reader. After retirement, he spent winters in Tucson, Ariz., traveling in his RV. He was a member of the National Association of Retired Federal Employees.

His family said he was a loving father and husband.

Mr. Stokes is survived by his wife of 27 years, Georgia Stokes of Jamestown; a brother and sister-in-law, Albert and Agnes Stokes of Fremont, Ohio; a son and daughter-in-law, Phillip and Cheryl Stokes of Valley Springs; a daughter, Marian Gee of Selah, Wash.; a stepson and stepdaughter-in-law, Michael and Clydeen Mooney of Rochester, Wash.; two stepdaughters and stepsons-in-law, Kathryn and John Pickhinke of Cortez, Colo., and Jill and James Brewster of Dolores, Colo.; 11 grandchildren, Michael Mooney Jr. and Courtney, Alexander and Cassie Stokes, all of Modesto, Leslie Johnson of Dolores, Colo., Tiffany Armstrong of Aurora, Colo., Bodie Brewster and John David Maldonado, both of Cortez, Colo., Ian Thomas of San Diego, Tori Mooney of Columbia, Todd Mooney of Rochester, Wash.; and 10 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Albert and Helen Stokes, and a grandchild.

No services are scheduled at his request.

Ernest Lyle Hope

April 6, 1915 — Aug. 31, 2003

Longtime Sonora resident Ernest Lyle Hope died Aug. 31 at a Ripon care home. He was 88.

He was born in Viscount, Saskatchewan, Canada. He moved to the United States in 1981, where he later became a U.S. citizen. He spent most of his life in California. He lived 42 years in Sonora, and the past five years in the Manteca-Ripon area.

He was a member of the United Methodist Church in Soulsbyville. He worked as a meat cutter for more than 40 years.

His family said he enjoyed his family and traveling by motor home with his wife of 64 years, Eileen.

Mr. Hope is survived by his wife, Eileen Hope of Manteca; his sister, Doris Nelson of Red Bluff; his children, Ret. Col. John Hope of Springfield, Va., Ret. Major Kenneth Hope of Merced, Linda Hofman of Manteca, Andrea Ferguson of Walnut Creek and Alan Hope of Elk Grove; 18 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and two great-great grandchildren.

A service will be at 3:30 p.m. Sunday at the United Methodist Church in Soulsbyville.

Nautilus Society in Sacramento is handling arrangements.

William ‘Bill' Stauss

Aug. 19, 1959 — Sept. 4, 2003

Former longtime Groveland resident William "Bill" Stauss died unexpectedly Thursday at a Modesto medical center. He was 44.

He was born in Cheyenne, Wyo., and moved to California when he was young. He was a resident of Groveland for 23 years prior to moving to Modesto. He lived in Modesto for more than 20 years.

He worked as a receptionist of Sutter Gould Medical Foundation for one year. He was a graduate of Sonora High School. He attended Columbia College and graduated from Modesto Junior College. He graduated from California State University, Stanislaus, with a bachelor's degree in finance. He was a member of First Baptist Church of Modesto.

Mr. Stauss is survived by his wife, Deborah Stauss of Modesto; his adoptive parents, Renee Brumby of Merced and Gary Brumby of Lake Havasu, Ariz.; a brother, Raymond Stauss of Sonora; sisters, Cheryl Autry of Atwater and Kathy Brumby of Burbank; three nieces; and three nephews.

A memorial service will be at 11 a.m. tomorrow at the First Baptist Church of Modesto.

Franklin & Downs-Colonial Chapel is handling arrangements.

Eugene Raymond Watson

Jan. 11, 1938 — Sept. 5, 2003

Eugene Raymond Watson of Columbia died Friday at a Sonora hospital. He was 65.

He was born in Oakland and lived in Columbia for five years. He was a former resident of San Pablo. He worked as a radio technician.

Mr. Watson is survived by his son, Mark Watson of Idaho; and two brothers, Robert Watson of Vallecito and Gary Watson of Los Gatos.

A memorial service is scheduled for 2:30 p.m. Thursday at Foothill Community Church, off Glory Hole Road in Angels Camp.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Bethesda Teaching Ministry - Rancho Santa Marta, P.O. Box 20028, El Cajon, CA 95021.
