Lewis

Theo Gwyn

June 4, 1914 – Sept. 15, 2004

Former longtime Long Barn resident Lewis Theo Gwyn died Sept. 15 at his home in Reno, Nev. He was 90.

He was born in Reno, Ill., to Henry and Minnie Gwyn.

He traveled west during the Depression, accepting any work available, eventually landing in San Francisco.

His family said he was proud of the fact that throughout the Depression he lacked work for only two weeks time. Throughout his working life, he was able to perfect several avocations, one was bartending at the Sir Francis Drake Hotel in San Francisco. He also worked in the woods as a tree topper, crane operator and carpenter.

In 1938, he married his childhood sweetheart, Ruth Lohman. Three years later, they and their infant son moved from San Francisco to Long Barn, where for the first year, they comprised one third of Long Barn's population, his family added.

He continued to live there until 2000, when, with his health failing, he moved to Reno, Nev., with his son and family.

He was a 45-year member of Carpenter's Local No. 25 and during the winter every year he was "Hill Boss" at Dodge Ridge Ski Area, his family said. Widely known for his quick wit, infectious smile and willingness to lend a helping hand, he was a friend to all, his family added.

Mr. Gwyn is survived by his son and daughter-in-law, Rich and Marjorie Gwyn of Reno; brother and sister-in-law, Eldon and Angie Gwyn of Ohio; his sister, Genevieve Lauer of Connecticut; grandchildren, Rachel and Danny Gwyn and Dane Knudtson, all of Reno, and Eric Knudtson of Seattle; five great-grandchildren; and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Ruth; old fishing buddies; family; and friends.

A remembrance gathering of family and friends will be in Long Barn at a later date.

Donations may be made in his memory to Saint Mary's Hospice, in care of Saint Mary's Foundation, 520 W. 6th St., Reno, NV 89503 or to a charity of choice.
