Kathy Njirich Fiore
March 1, 1951 — Aug. 25, 2014
Kathy Fiore, 63, died Aug. 25, 2014, in Columbia, Calif.
She was born March 1, 1951, at Columbia Way hospital in Sonora to Anthony Paul Njirich and Dorothy Maxine Lowhrey. Her father was a construction worker in Tuolumne County and was born and raised in Columbia. Her mother moved here from Arkansas and worked in nursing homes.
Kathy spent her early years in Columbia surrounded by her siblings and cousins. At the age of 5, the family relocated to Reno, where she attended school.
As a teenager, Kathy returned to Tuolumne County and her childhood home of Columbia and helped raise her siblings. She married Frank Verbeck and had one child, Lisa Lorraine Verbeck, and settled in Sonora.
She moved to Sacramento to raise her daughter and be near her mother. While there, she met Doug Fiore, and eventually returned to establish a successful downtown business called Kathy’s Country Store in Sonora in the mid-1980s. She continued her career path by returning to school and becoming a legal secretary. She did this work for approximately 30 years in Tuolumne County, Sacramento and Southern California before health problems forced her into early retirement.
She was an active member of the Covenant Presbyterian Church, and tutored youth in the congregation, worked in the office and delivered meals to needy families.
Her interests included family, gardening, interior decorating, yoga and swimming. However, her greatest love and devotion were to her daughter and grandson.
Ms. Fiore was preceded in death by parents Anthony Njirich and Dorothy Lowhrey.
She is survived by her daughter, Lisa Verbeck Wooldridge; grandson, Evan Wooldridge; brother, James Njirich; two sisters, Laura Reneau and Betty Boone; as well as many family members and friends.
A memorial service will be held at St. James Episcopal Church, “The Red Church” at 7 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 7.

Louis ‘Lou’ Egan
Jan. 8, 1948 — Aug. 27, 2014
On Aug. 27, 2014, we lost our hero.
Lou Egan was a great man. Born in San Mateo on Jan. 8, 1948, he wasn’t the man that he grew to become at that point, but he was loved, and as the years passed he grew the love and spread it to others. On Feb. 13, 1965, he and his girlfriend (Betty) became husband and wife (Mr. and Mrs. Egan). His love became their love and shortly afterward their first daughter (Connie) was born, followed by a son (Eric), a daughter (Cindy) and their youngest son (Chris).
That was just the beginning. Although Lou was a mechanic by trade, there was nothing he couldn’t do. He and his wife found passions together for the next 50 years, raising their kids along with multiple businesses. They raised exotic animals, built different auto repair shops, pet shops and cleaning services. Lou taught all his kids to water ski, hike, camp and snow ski, well, he took them snow skiing.
As time marched on, Lou and Betty decided they still needed to spread their love. They adopted a son (Bob) and, finally, their youngest daughter (Angelina). They retired from the daily grind of the Bay Area and moved to Twain Harte, Calif., where Lou took a relaxing job as a mechanic. Yes, the retired life was now upon him. Instead of working 50 to 60 hours as the entrepreneur, he was now working 40 hours in a small two-man shop in Twain Harte called Rocky’s Auto.
Even in his retirement, Lou found time for family and friends. He felt his strongest and most complete when his family was with him, and it was on Aug. 27, 2014, at 6:08 p.m. that Lou passed away surrounded by his wife and family.
We will truly miss the man that showed us how to stand tall and to face life’s challenges head-on.
Rest in peace my love, Dad, Papa, Poppy.
Lou is survived by his wife of 50 years, Betty; his six children, Connie, Eric and daughter-in-law Sharon, Cindy and son-in-law Patrick, Chris and daughter-in-law Theresa, Bob and Angelina; 15 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
Memorial services will be held at 2 p.m. today at Twain Harte Bible Church. Graveside service at 1 p.m. Thursday at Skylawn Memorial Park in San Mateo.
