William Rahmer Dwyer

May 13, 1918 – Aug. 30, 2004

Longtime Sonora resident William Rahmer Dwyer died Monday at a Modesto medical center. He was 86.

He was born and raised in the Potrero District of San Francisco. He played soccer at San Mateo Junior College and worked as a shipfitter in Bethlehem Shipyards in San Francisco for 35 years. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II.

After retirement, he and his wife moved to Sonora and owned and operated an antiques shop, the Treasure Shop, in downtown Sonora, where he always had projects and repairs, his family said.

He was a member of the Retired Employees of Bethlehem Shipyard, Sons In Retirement (SIRS) and St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Sonora.

His family said he was an avid hunter and fisherman who had many friends and always enjoyed visiting and lunches.

He had lived in Sonora since 1980.

Mr. Dwyer is survived by his sister, Harriet Sauders of San Francisco; and his dog, Tina.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Elena, in December 1987; his parents, William Dwyer and Lillian Sauders; and his brother, Dinsmore U. Sauders.

A funeral service was to be held at 2 p.m. today at Terzich and Wilson Funeral Home. A graveside service is scheduled for 1 p.m. Tuesday at San Francisco National Cemetery at the Presidio.

Donations can be made to the Alzheimers Day Care and Resource Center, Tuolumne General Hospital Foundation, 101 Hospital Road, Sonora, CA 95370.

Robert Barnhart Finnagan

May 19, 1917 – Aug. 26, 2004

Longtime Angels Camp resident Robert Barnhart Finnagan died Aug. 26 at his home. He was 87.

He was born in Sacramento and had lived in Angels Camp for the last 75 years.

He attended Washington Elementary School in Sacramento. He graduated from Calaveras High School in 1934 and went to work for the grocery store Pliler and Lillie in Valley Springs from 1933-40.

He worked as a postmaster for the U.S. Post Office in Valley Springs from 1939-73. He later worked for United Couriers from 1978-86 and then Prospect Motors from 1986-94.

Mr. Finnagan was instrumental in establishing the Public Utilities District in Valley Springs, his family said. He was a member of the Calaveras Chamber of Commerce for 20 years, where he served as chairman and did publicity for the bond elections in 1950 and was president from 1955-56.

He served as secretary of a water district from 1949-52 and was a member of the Calaveras Historical Society for 30 years.

Mr. Finnagan is survived by many nieces and nephews.

Services were held.

San Andreas Memorial Chapel handled arrangements.

Trevor Anthony Sawyers

March 5, 1971 – Aug. 28, 2004

Lifelong Tuolumne County resident Trevor "Trev" Anthony Sawyers died unexpectedly Saturday at his Chinese Camp home. He was 33.

He was born in Sonora. He was a nursery man and extremely knowledgeable and skilled with plant life, family members said.

They said he was an avid fisherman and fly fishing was his favorite. He loved the outdoors, kayaking, bike riding, hiking and gardening, his family added.

He also enjoyed reading. His family said Terry Goodkind and John Sandford were his favorite authors, and Yosemite was the most beautiful place he had ever been. He also loved sunsets.

Mr. Sawyers is survived by his parents, Galen and Betty Sawyers of Drain, Ore.; a sister, Terri Sawyers of Drain; grandparents, Ed and Marion Farrell of Chinese Camp; an aunt, Maddy Custer and friend, Glenn Tonn, both of Tuolumne; a great aunt, Helen Wilkinson of Jamestown; cousins, Rene McGrew and her husband, John, of Kuna, Idaho, Regina Everhart of Reidsville, N.C., Kevin Custer of Sacramento, Johnny Wilkinson of Jamestown, Jimmy Wilkinson and his wife, Judy, of Tuolumne and Brenda Wilkinson of Fresno.

He was preceded in death by his paternal grandparents, Jacob Sawyers and Vesta Rebello; an uncle, Kieth Custer; a great uncle, Jack Wilkinson; and dear friend, Dee.

Burial will be in Oregon.

Roscoe F. Huls

Oct. 25, 1915 – Aug. 31, 2004

Longtime Calaveras County resident Roscoe F. Huls died Tuesday at his Altaville home. He was 88.

He was born in Grove, Okla., and lived in Calaveras County for 58 years, most recently in Altaville. He worked as a laborer with American Forest Products in Wilseyville and in Martell, Amador County. He was a member of the Builders and Joiners Union No. 2927 in Sutter Creek.

Mr. Huls is survived by his wife, Evelyn G. Huls of Altaville; daughters, Frances Busch of Santa Rosa and Mary Jane Camacho of Kalispell, Mont.; a niece and caregiver, Cynthia Silva of West Point; a brother, Ray Huls of Cloverdale, Sonoma County; sisters, Frances Swartsfager of Houston and Wilma Duncan of Oklahoma City, Okla.; grandchildren, Larry Busch of Santa Cruz, Teri Wiess of Saratoga, Santa Clara County, John and Ron Loomis and Cathy Foppiano, all of Kalispell, Leah Whitear of Sonora and Charles Camacho of Jamestown; and numerous great-great-grandchildren, nephews and other nieces.

Visitation is scheduled from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. today at Angels Memorial Chapel. A graveside service is scheduled for 11 a.m. tomorrow at West Point Cemetery in West Point.

Angels Memorial Chapel is handling arrangements.
