Sterling White Bowman

Longtime resident of Mokelumne Hill Sterling White Bowman died Saturday at his home. He was 70.
He was born in St. George, Utah, and lived in Mokelumne Hill for 26 years. He was a service station owner in San Jose, served in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean War and was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in San Andreas.
Mr. Bowman is survived by his wife, Joyce of Mokelumne Hill; a son, James Stephen Bowman of Manteca; a daughter, Deborah May Lanford of Modesto; two brothers, Bill Bowman of Pahrump, Nev., and Don Bowman of Arizona; a sister, Loretta Bowman of Hollister; four grandchildren; many family and friends; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by two sons, Kenneth Bowman on Aug. 30, and Rickey Jay Bowman.
A funeral service is scheduled for 11 a.m. Friday at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in San Andreas.

David B. Scaruffi

David B. Scaruffi of Twain Harte died unexpectedly last Wednesday in Sonora. He was 51.
He was born in San Francisco and grew up in Sunnyvale. He had many interests, which he turned into his own business of woodworking, creating innovative gardens, remodeling homes and turning second-hand items into works of art, his family said.
His family members praised his appreciation of nature and his helpfulness and generosity, and said it comforts them that he had become a Christian.
Mr. Scaruffi is survived by his mother, Elaine Brunnings; sisters, Karen Price and Debby Scaruffi; niece, Shannon Price; nephew, Aaron Price; and companion, Debbie Brownell.
He was preceded in death by his father, Joseph Scaruffi.
A memorial service was held Sunday at the Calvary Chapel in Soulsbyville.

Jason Lee Lawrence

Jason Lee Lawrence, formerly of Angels Camp, died Friday from injuries suffered in a car accident in Lodi. He was 33.
He was born in Stockton and had lived in Angels Camp for 15 years. He graduated from Mark Twain Elementary and Bret Harte High School. He lived in Citrus Heights and then in Modesto for more than five years. He worked as a carpenter.
Mr. Lawrence is survived by his mother, Linda Lawrence of Citrus Heights; two sisters, Mashanda Pritchard and Brandie Lee, both of Citrus Heights; grandparents Jess and Dolores Brower of Seattle; nephew David Lee Pritchard III; and niece Haillie Marie Pritchard.
He was preceded in death by his father, Tori Lawrence, in 1970.
Visitation is scheduled for 1-5 p.m. today at Angels Memorial Chapel. A graveside service is scheduled for 10 a.m. tomorrow at Altaville Protestant Cemetery. A burial is scheduled at Altaville Protestant Cemetery in Altaville.

Pauline Vergez, a longtime resident of Twain Harte, died Friday in an Alamo care home. She was 86.
She was born in Iowa and lived in Alameda for 40 years, where she worked at the West End French Laundry with her husband, Gabriel, and brother-in-law, Emile Vergez. She later moved to Twain Harte, where she spent most of her last 30 years.
Her family said she loved Twain Harte most within the Tuolumne County area.
She is survived by her daughter, Joan Trainer Vergez of Pleasant Hill; grandchildren Kimberly Trainer of Walnut Creek and Kenneth Trainer and girlfriend, Irene, of Pleasant Hill; great-grandchildren Nicholas Trainer of Walnut Creek and Gabriel Trainer of Pleasant Hill; nieces and nephews, Jimmy Vergez of Sonora, Kathy Killin and Michael Reagan, both of Los Angeles, Rene Vergez of Palm Springs, and Cherie and Gilbert Araujo, both of San Diego; grandnephew Adam Araujo of San Diego; grandniece Ashley Araujo of San Diego; and a sister, Thelma of Texas.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 52 years, Gabriel Vergez.
No services are scheduled. Her ashes will be taken to Twain Harte. Her family will be at her home tomorrow.
