‘Sy' Hylla

Nov. 7, 1928 – Sept. 7, 2004

Former longtime Sonora resident Sylvester "Sy" Hylla died Tuesday at a San Bernardino hospital from cancer. He was 75.

He was born in Holford, Minn., and had lived in Sonora for nearly 40 years. He worked for the Department of Motor Vehicles for 20 years and retired as a manager at the Sonora office in 1991. One year after his retirement, he moved to San Bernardino with his wife.

Mr. Hylla is survived by his children, Linda Paul of Sonora, Joanne Hylla and Mary Stewart, both of San Bernardino, Robert Hylla of Great Falls, Mont., Roxanna Wetherington of Georgia, Theresa Powers of Myrtle Creek, Ore., and Janel Farison of Broaddus, Texas; a gr-andson whom he and his wife raised, William Hylla of Ceres; and numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 54 years, Mary.

A service is scheduled for 11 a.m. Friday at Montecito Memorial Park and Mortuary, 24145 Barton Road in Loma Linda.

(Burden) Horton

Jan. 26, 1927– Sept. 6, 2004

Mary (Burden) Horton of Sonora died Sept. 6 at her home. She was 77.

She was born in Anaheim, Orange County, and lived in Sonora for 13 years. She graduated from Pomona College in Claremont, Los Angeles County, and was an avid volunteer in the community before leukemia prevented outside activities.

She was a member of Sonora Community Hospital Auxiliary, an active participant in Christmas Partners and a volunteer income tax counselor for the American Association of Retired Persons. She was a member of the American Association of University Women and the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of Tuolumne County. Her interests were varied and included a great deal of volunteer activities, considerable travel and abundant good times with family and friends, her family said.

She is survived by her husband of 56 years, Robert; sons and daughters-in-law, Robert D. Horton and Cathy Medich of Pleasanton and Daniel W. and Cathy Horton of Vienna, Va.; grandchildren, Benjamin and Michael Horton of Pleasanton; a sister, Betty Lewis of Anaheim; a brother, James Burden of Menlo Park, San Mateo County; sisters-in-law, Carolyn Burden of Menlo Park, Dorothy Brown of Bakersfield and Kathryn Burden of Richmond, Va.; many nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews; and the family dog, Annabelle.

She was preceded in death by a daughter, Martha Susan; a son, Thomas Charles; and a brother, John William Burden.

A private graveside service was held Thursday at Woodlawn Memorial Cemetery in Colma, San Mateo County. A memorial service will be held at a later date in Sonora.

Donations can be made in Mary's memory to Visiting Nurse Association, Hospice of the Sierra, P.O. Box 4805, Sonora, CA 95370.

CORTES — Vira Cortes, 91, of Sonora died yesterday at a Sonora hospital. Terzich and Wilson Funeral Home is handling arrangements.

DARONE — Alice Darone, 87, of Sonora died Friday at her home. Terzich and Wilson Funeral Home is handling arrangements.

HARRIS — Vera Harris, 74, of Sonora died Friday at a Sonora hospital. Terzich and Wilson Funeral Home is handling arrangements.

McCOWN — Leslie "Buzz" McCown, 60, of Sonora died Saturday at a Sonora hospital. Terzich and Wilson Funeral Home is handling arrangements.
