Jean R. Gunn

Feb. 3, 1917 — Sept. 9, 2003

Jean R. Gunn of Jamestown died Tuesday at a Sonora care home. She was 86.

She was born in Alameda and had lived in the Sonora area for eight years. She was a homemaker for 66 years. She was a graduate of San Leandro High School and Salinas Junior College.

Her family said she enjoyed gardening, sewing, canning, creative writing and the loving care of her family.

She is survived by her husband of 66 years, Walter H. Gunn of Jamestown; sons and daughter-in-law Walter J. and Kellie Gunn of San Andreas and Alvin R. Gunn of San Lorenzo; daughters and sons-in-law Betty Jean and Paul Cox of Squaw Valley, Carol A. and Larry Mercer of Sanger, and Beverly and Rodney Schock of Vallecito; brothers Clifford A. Gossett of Castro Valley and Gilbert B. Gossett of Half Moon Bay; 14 grandchildren; 35 great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her brothers Chester A. Gossett in 1997 and Allison E. Gossett in 2000, a sister, Elvira A. Amyx in 2001, three grandsons and a great-great grandson.

A memorial service is scheduled for 1:30 p.m. Saturday at Heuton Memorial Chapel.

Donations can be made in Jean's name to any favorite charity.

Dorothy M. Pahlow

May 14, 1922 — Sept. 7, 2003

Longtime resident of Sonora Dorothy M. Pahlow died Sunday at a Sonora hospital. She was 81.

She was born in Pence, Ind. She was a homemaker for 61 years, and a member of Heritage Christian Church of Sonora.

Her family said she loved to sew.

She is survived by her husband, Orvel Pahlow of Sonora; sons Earl Pahlow of Felton and Gary Pahlow of Aptos; granddaughters Renee Pahlow of Oregon and Colleen Pahlow of Aptos; a grandson, Kenny Pahlow of Oregon; and a sister, Mildred Hosick of Indiana.

She was preceded in death by a sister, Max Hutton.

A memorial service will be held at a later date.

Wilson Bain Humphries

Nov. 5, 1907 — Sept. 6, 2003

Wilson Bain Humphries of Sonora died Saturday at a Sonora care home. He was 95.

He was born in Kentucky, and when he was a baby, his family moved to Shirley, Ind., where he was raised. He had lived in Sonora for three years, and before that, in Gustine for 29 years. He worked as a job printer for 52 years, and he and his wife owned and operated a grocery store in Fairland, Ind., and a department store in Centerville, Ind. He lived all over the United States during his lifetime.

His family said he enjoyed fishing and camping. He was a Christian, his family added.

Mr. Humphries is survived by his wife of 62 years, Helen Humphries of Sonora; a son and daughter-in-law, Wil B. and Carol Humphries of Soulsbyville; two grandsons, Wilson B. Humphries III of Fairbanks, Alaska, who is in the Army, and Brandon Humphries of Soulsbyville, who will join the Army and be stationed in Fort Benning, Ga.; as well as many other relatives.

He was preceded in death by a brother, Dewitt Humphries.

No services are scheduled at his request.

Marguerite G. Elliott

April 10, 1909 — Sept. 6, 2003

Longtime resident of Sonora Marguerite G. Elliott died Saturday at a Sonora hospital. She was 94.

She was born in Alliance, Neb., and lived in Sonora for 34 years. She was a plant worker for 20 years and a member of the Heritage Christian Church of Sonora.

She is survived by her brothers Orvel Pahlow of Sonora and John Pahlow of Nebraska; and a sister, Jean Behm of Colorado.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Leonard Elliott, in 1978.

Visitation is scheduled from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. tomorrow at Heuton Memorial Chapel. A funeral service is scheduled for 11:30 a.m. Saturday at the chapel.
