Obituaries for September 10, 2003

William A. Autler

Jan. 20, 1922 — Sept. 6, 2003

William A. Autler of Mi-Wuk Village died Saturday at a Sonora hospital. He was 81.

He was born in Craig, Colo., and lived in Mi-Wuk Village for 11 years.

He worked as a truck driver for C & H Transportation in Tracy for 20 years. He was a member of Sierra Bible Church of Sonora. He served in the Navy during World War II. He lived in Manteca for 40 years. He owned a dairy in Manteca for 20 years. He worked as a sales and service representative for Towner and Meyer in Stockton for 20 years.

Mr. Autler is survived by his wife, Jessie Autler of Mi-Wuk Village; four sons, Bill and Chris Autler, both of Vallejo, Robert Autler of Manteca and Ron Autler of Sierra Village; a daughter, Carol Aksland of Manteca; 12 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

A memorial service is scheduled for 2 p.m. Sunday at Sierra Bible Church.

Larry Dale Elliott

Aug. 18, 1949 — Sept. 7, 2003

Larry Dale Elliott of Sonora died Sunday at a Sonora hospital after a long illness. He was 54.

He was born in Torrance and grew up in Manteca. He moved to Sonora since 1998.

He worked as a laborer for one year with Libby Owens Ford before a diving accident left him paralyzed. He led an active life prior to his accident, his family said.

His family said he enjoyed crafts and music, and he used to play the drums.

Mr. Elliott is survived by his mother, Ruby Ray of Jamestown; stepfather, Bob Ray of Jamestown; a niece, Melodee Elliott of Pittsburg, Contra Costa County; numerous aunts, uncles, and cousins; and many good friends at Unit 6 of Sonora Community Hospital.

He was preceded in death by his father, James A. Elliott; a brother, James Lee Elliott; and a sister, Debbie Elliott Asher.

A private family graveside service is scheduled at Park View Cemetery in Manteca.

Annette Michelle Sanders

April 13, 1961 — Aug. 30, 2003

Annette Michelle Sanders of Sonora died unexpectedly Aug. 30 at her home. She was 42.

She was born in San Mateo and lived in Sonora for many years.

She is survived by her daughter, Jennifer, of Reno, Nev.; her son, Anthony Jr. of Pacifica; her mother, Laureen Hefner of Reno, Nev.; a sister, Kernah, of California; a brother, Keith, of Virginia; and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her father, Harold, in 1993, and a brother, Michael, in 1994.

An informal gathering of family and friends is scheduled for 1 p.m. Friday at the David Lambert Community Center, 347 W. Jackson St., Sonora.

Carol E. McCue

Jan. 8, 1907 — Sept. 7, 2003

Former longtime Columbia resident Carol E. McCue died Sunday at a Union City care home. She was 96.

She was born in Turtle Creek, Pa., and lived in Union City for five years. She lived in Columbia from 1975 to 1998.

She owned a motel, the Rosebowl Motel, in Pasadena for 18 years. She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of the 49ers in Columbia and the American Association of Retired Persons.

She is survived by her sons, James Isler of Reedsport, Ore., and Carl Isler of Arizona; her brothers, Larry Long of Houston and Wilfred Long of Arizona; five grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and one great-great grandchild.

She was preceded in death by her husband, James McCue, and by a grandson, Ron Isler, in August 2003.

At her request, no services are planned.

Nolan ‘Doc' Elston

April 3, 1954 — Sept. 4, 2003

Nolan "Doc" Elston of Columbia died Thursday at a Sacramento medical center from complications of leukemia. He was 49.

He was born in Los Angeles and was raised in Riverbank. He graduated from Riverbank High School in 1972 and belonged to Boy Scout Troop No. 48. He had lived in Columbia for 12 years.

He owned and operated Elston Commercial Repair for eight years. He also was a member of the International Brotherhood Electrical Workers No. 1245.

He was a lifelong musician and played the guitar. He was a member and lead guitar player in the "Hide your Muthers" band. The band played for free for many fund-raisers for people in need.

He was a member of E. Clampus Vitus Matuca Chapter and, since 1982, was a member of the E. Clampus Vitus Estanislao in Modesto.

Mr. Elston is survived by his wife of 25 years, Heidi Elston of Columbia; a son, Jake Diehl, and his girlfriend, Jessica Kolak, both of Modesto; two grandsons, Tyler and Joey Diehl of Waterford; and close friends, Moose Dutton of Oakdale, Alvin Harper of Bakersfield, and Robert Brundage of Columbia.

A graveside service is scheduled for 5:15 p.m. today at Columbia City Cemetery.
