Melba Maxine Steinsiek

Rail Road Flat resident Melba Maxine Steinsiek died Sept. 27 at her home. She was 82.
Born in Stuart, Okla., to Chester and Violet Merrell, she married Dwain L. Steinsiek in 1946 and the couple moved to Rail Road Flat shortly thereafter. They lived there for 65 years.
Mrs. Steinsiek was a homemaker and partner in her husband’s timber falling business for 43 years. She maintained camps and cooked for the falling crews, and did the business books.
Mrs. Steinsiek is survived by her husband, Dwain L. Steinsiek, of Rail Road Flat; children and their spouses, Donald C. and Anne Steinsiek, of Chico, and Jimmy W. and Terry Steinsiek, of Rail Road Flat; grandchildren, Abra Teague, of Pine Grove, Alana Steinsiek, of Los Angeles, and Jenna and Andrea Steinsiek, both of Chico; and four great-grandchildren.
A graveside service is scheduled for 1:30 p.m. Saturday at the Independence Rail Road Flat Cemetery. A gathering at the Steinsiek home will be held after the service.

Phyllis Louise Ames Hanshaw Lawyer

Former Sonora resident Phyllis Louise Ames Hanshaw Lawyer died Sept. 18 from injuries sustained in a car accident on Highway 12 in Lodi. She was 84.
Born in Roseville to Earl Ames and Naoma Lucas Robertson, her family moved to Sonora in the late 1930s. She graduated from Sonora High School in 1945.
She married Charles “Chuck” Hanshaw in 1948. The couple settled in Modesto, where she worked as a telephone operator for the state hospital system for 30 years. She worked for the Great Valley Center until the time of her death.
After her husband died in 1976, she went on to marry Jim Quick and later Jay Lawyer.
She was a member of the Dixieland Jazz Society. She enjoyed traveling, dancing, wine tasting, cooking and dining.
She is survived by her children, Ames Hanshaw, of Modesto, and Leslie Voyles, of Farmington, Mo.; grandchildren, Nathan Norbeck, of Confidence, and Erin Douglas, Shannon Berger, and Sean and Eileen Voyles, all of Missouri; and five great-grandchildren.
A memorial luncheon is scheduled from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday at a family friend’s home in Modesto.
