Mary ‘Marie’ Sourp

Sonora resident Mary “Marie” Sourp died Sept. 19 at Sonora Regional Medical Center. She was 91.
Born in Des Arc, Ark., to James D. and Clara Mae Maronay, she was the oldest of 10 children.
She married Ben C. Stith in 1936 and the couple had two children in Arkansas, before moving to Indiana where they had two more children.
In 1957, the family moved to Southern California where she became active in the Church of the Nazarene teaching Sunday school.
In 1974, she married Charles Sourp.
In 2009, she moved to Sonora to be closer to her daughter, Cheryl.
She was a homemaker for most of her life, but also worked for the pharmaceutical business for a number of years.
She enjoyed baking and gardening.
Mrs. Sourp is survived by her children, Carroll Stith, of Humphrey, Ark., Mary Hamilton, of Cortland, Ill., Donna Kaufman, of Murrieta, and Cheryl Ferreira, of Sonora; brothers, Earl Maronay, of Lonoke, Ark., Charlie Maronay, of Almyra, Ark., and Bill Maronay, of Casscoe, Ark.; 13 grandchildren; 29 great-grandchildren; and 11 great-great grandchildren.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her first husband, Ben C. Stith; and second husband, Charles Sourp.
A graveside service is scheduled for Oct. 15 at the Lone Tree Cemetery in Stuttgart, Ark.
