William ‘Bill’ Bowen

Dec. 12, 1922 — Aug. 13, 2013

Jamestown resident William “Bill” Bowen died Aug. 13 at Sonora Regional Medical Center. He was 90.

Mr. Bowen was born in Ranger, Texas. He retired from McDonnell Douglas Aircraft in Long Beach. 

Mr. Bowen enjoyed woodworking and dancing to oldies music. He also enjoyed watching Lawrence Welk on television.

He moved to Jamestown in 1999.

Mr. Bowen was preceded in death by his wife of 63 years, Ruth Bowen, in 2006.

He is survived by children Guy Bowen, of Sonora, JoJo Bowen, of Jamestown, Casey Bowen, of Bell Gardens, Los Angeles County, and Darrell Bowen, of Bellflower, Los Angeles County; and numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.

No services will be held.

Winnifred Ruth (Freyschlag) Lindsay

Dec. 7, 1928 — Aug. 4, 2013

Former Sonora resident Winnifred Ruth (Freyschlag) Lindsay died August 4, 2013 in Escondido. She was 84.

Mrs. Lindsay was born in San Jose to Herman and E. Winnifred (Bagby) Freyschlag.

She married Alexander Lewis Lindsay Jr. in Mariposa on Sept. 3, 1950.

She grew up in Mariposa County, graduated from Mariposa High School then completed bachelor’s and master’s degrees in history and elementary education from the University of California, Berkeley. 

After living in many places across the country, the Lindsays returned to Sonora in 1989. She moved to Escondido in 2003. 

Mrs. Lindsay was active in American Association of University Women, Cal Alumni and Ladies Auxiliary of the Cedar Ridge Fire District. She enjoyed quilting, needlework, reading, camping, swimming and travelling. 

Mrs. Lindsay was preceded in death by her parents; and by her husband, Alexander Lindsay Jr., in 2001.

She is survived by her children and their spouses, Gail and John Euber of Evansville, Ind., David Lindsay and Margaret Ingalls, of Benicia, William and Megan Lindsay, of Walnut Creek, and Susan and Randy Eskridge, of San Diego; and grandchildren, Julie Euber, of Mesa, Ariz., Jeffrey Euber, of Evansville, Alexander and Douglas Lindsay, of Benicia, Sarah Lindsay, of Washington, D.C., Ian Lindsay, of Walnut Creek, and Katherine and Brianna Eskridge, of San Diego.

A celebration of life will be held from 2 to 5 p.m. on Saturday at Banny’s Restaurant at Mountain Springs Golf Club, 17566 Lime Kiln Road, Sonora.

Vincent Michael Rivera

June 11, 1966 — Aug. 29, 2013

Former Sonora resident Vincent Michael Rivera died Aug. 29 in Phoenix, Ariz. He was 47.

Mr. Rivera was born in Phoenix to Patricia A. and Tony Rivera.

The family moved to California in 1980 and settled in Sonora in 1982 to be closer to family.

He graduated from Mother Lode Christian School in 1985 and attended Southern California College on a soccer scholarship.

He worked as a carpenter and cement contractor for more than 25 years. 

Mr. Rivera left California for Phoenix a few months ago.

He enjoyed sports, especially softball. He played in various local leagues.

Mr. Rivera was a member of Chapel in the Pines Church in Twain Harte and New Life Church in Santa Cruz.

Mr. Rivera was preceded in death by his stepfather, Huston Denham; grandmother, Alice Nissle; uncle, Stanley Kolpak; and one cousin.

He is survived by his wife, Kelly Kabrich Rivera, of Sonora; mother, Patricia Denham, of Sonora; sons, Shane Rivera and Dillon Rivera, of Sonora; father, Tony Rivera, of Phoenix; his siblings and their spouses, Richard “Joey” and Cindy Rivera, of Sonora, and Jerrod and Caroline Denham, of San Diego, and Christine Rivera, of Campbell; former wife, Renee Rivera, of Sonora; and numerous nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles and cousins.

A memorial service will he held at 2 p.m. Saturday at Chapel in the Pines, 18580 Cherokee Drive, Twain Harte. A service will also be held Sept. 26 at Victory Outreach Church in Phoenix.

Felix Marshall Romo Jr.

May 28, 1935 — Aug. 25, 2013

Longtime Sonora resident Felix Marshall “Fe” Romo Jr. died Aug. 25 at his home. He was 78.

Mr. Romo was born in Pittsburg and lived in Sonora for 39 years. He opened his own company, Romo Insurance, in the 1980s. He served five and half years combined in the U.S. Air Force and the National Guard. 

Mr. Romo was a member of the Lions Club, Elks Lodge, American Legion and veterans organizations. He was a lifetime member of the Lions Club.

Mr. Romo and his wife, Alice, took many vacations over the years and liked traveling. Mr. Romo was a longtime Oakland Raider football fan and Oakland A’s baseball fan. He held season tickets to the Raiders since the 1960s. He belonged to the Raiders Booster Club and never missed a home game.

Mr. Romo also enjoyed playing golf and played in many local charity tournaments.

Mr. Romo was preceded in death by his father, Felix Romo, in 1984; his mother, Stella Romo, in 2011; and his brother, Eric Romo, in 1983.

Mr. Romo is survived by his wife, Alice Romo, of Sonora; children Rosie Romo, of Sonora, Lisa Romo, of Modesto, Mary Childers, of Modesto, Doug Worthington, of Wash., Debbie Jones, of Texas, Dinah Worthington, of Sonora, Tom Costa, of Wash., and Ernestine Bruce, of Sonora; 21 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and his sister, Toni Feeney.

A service will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at the Elks Lodge, 100 Elk Drive, Sonora. A celebration of life will follow, also at the Elks Lodge.

A donation in his name may be made to Lions Club of Sonora All Star Football Game, P.O. Box 1115, Linden, CA 95236.

Loraine Bush ‘Lou’ (House) Oulton

April 5, 1922 — Sept. 3, 2013

Sonora resident Loriane Bush “Lou” (House) Oulton died Sept. 3 at Meadow View Manor in Sonora. She was 91.

Mrs. Oulton was born in Berkeley and was a homemaker. She enjoyed spending time with her family and in the outdoors. She enjoyed being around the water and her favorite place was the Russian River. She also enjoyed traveling.

Mrs. Oulton was preceded in death by her husband, Gerard Oulton, in 2005.

She is survived by her daughter, Lynda Mitchell, of Cold Springs; grandchildren Jason Smith, of Ponderosa Hills, Jennifer Smith, of Live Oak, Texas, and Samantha Kuhnel, of Jamestown; four great-grandchildren; and siblings, Roslyn Collins and Fred Ernest.

A service will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at Cypress Lawns, 1370 El Camino Real, Colma.
